Born May 29, 1931 in Muskegon, MI he was the son of the late Edward R. and Louise (Kooman) Swett.
John graduated from Michigan State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree. He served his country honorably with the U.S. Air Force as an officer. John was employed with G.E. where he worked in many different marketing assignments and lastly as Manager of Marketing in Waynesboro. In 1991 he was elected Supervisor of the South River District of Augusta County. He organized the first county wide spring trash clean up and was a part of the team that formed a major waste and water agreement with the city of Staunton. John served as a board member of the Augusta County Service Authority during the years when the county was obliged to undertake huge water projects. He served on many boards and civic activities including: CAPSAW Board, Youth Commission, Valley Alliance for Education, SCORE, Sweet Dreams Festival, Chamber of Commerce, several charitable fund raising campaigns and provided for and cared for the “Welcome to Stuarts Draft” signs since 1989. John was a lifelong member of Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed working in the yard, watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren fish in his pond and working out five to six days per week at the gym. He would kibitz with 50 or more people he knew by their first name but didn’t have the “foggiest” idea of their last name.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Swett; granddaughter, Stephanie Swett; brother, Robert Swett.
Survivors include his children, David Swett and wife, Kimbra, John R. Swett and wife, Barb and Roger A. Swett and wife, Cindi; daughter-in-law, Starla Sterling and husband, Alan; grandchildren, Robert and wife, Julie, Brian and wife, Jenn, Joanna and husband, Joe Dan, Jenna and husband, Micah, Chris, Mallory and Mark; great grandchildren, Macie, Megan, Addison, Brady, Mack, Nathan, Claire, Ryan and soon to be born, Wyatt. He had a special place in his heart for his younger sister, Louella Floyd and husband, John. He often talked about how wonderful his family was and said, “There is not a clinker in the bunch!”
