James Avon Lanier, 89, of Waynesboro, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 7, 2023. Born on January 14, 1933, Harnett County, NC.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Carlos V. Lanier, mother, Mary Murchison Lanier, brother, Wayne Lanier of Lillington, North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruby Holland Lanier, his daughter and son-in-law, Gail McClung (Tom), and daughter and son-in-law, Ramona DeWitt (C. Jay), son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey (Kelli). He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Marshall McClung, Bradley DeWitt, Lauren Conner, Taylor Johnson, Noah and Jacob Lanier, and three great grandchildren: Hayden and Channing Johnson, and Winston Conner. Brothers Harold (Dencie) Lanier and Larry Lanier of Lillington, NC.
Jim served in the Air Force before graduating from North Carolina State University in 1957 as an electrical engineer. He worked for General Electric for most of his career and retired from Genicom Corporation in Waynesboro, Va.
He loved the Salt Life, particularly at Topsail Beach, NC, where he owned several homes throughout his lifetime and even had permanent residence for some years. He enjoyed boating and sailing, along with time at the beach with his family.
A private celebration of life will be held at Topsail Beach with his family later this year.
A special thank you goes out to the staff at Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab in Fishersville, Va for their comfort, care and compassion over the last several months.
