He was born October 14, 1930 in Waynesboro, a son of the late Nathan Henry and Annie Terrell Baker.
He served in the United States Air Force where he was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant, retired from the former General Electric-Genicom Company of Waynesboro and was a member of Second Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro.
He was a Data Processing Supervisor-Manager for the U. S. Air Force, University of Virginia, Virginia Metal Products Co., General Electric Co; President of North Little League Baseball Association; Chairman, Troop 131, Boy Scout Troop Committee, Main Street Methodist Church; served as Records Chairman, United Community Fund; a member of the former Basic City Odd Fellows Lodge 29, where he served as treasurer, was a member of American Legion Post 340; served on Council for the City of Waynesboro, volunteered at the Rockfish Gap Visitors Center; served on both the Electoral Board and Planning Commission for the City of Waynesboro, and was voted “Boy of the Month” by the Waynesboro Exchange Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel McCrary Baker, and a brother Nathan F. Baker.
Survivors include a son, George David Baker, Jr. and his wife, Vicki of Louisa; two daughters, Sharon Baker Tooley of Waynesboro and Virginia Baker Elgort and her husband, Andrew C. of Charlottesville; brother, Marshall Stanley Baker of Coraropalis, PA.; grandchildren, Joshua David Tooley and wife Bridget, Allison Tooley Quick and husband Barnaby, Mayan Elgort Brown and husband Jay, Ari Nathaniel Elgort, Kristen Baker Harrison and husband Chris, David Christopher Baker, Nicholas Alexander Baker, Kaili Ping Baker, Mya Sufen Baker; great-grandchildren, Sawyer Davidson Quick, Baylor McBride Quick and Ayva Riley Harrison.
He also leaves a special friend and caregiver, Pam Hale.
A private family service will be held 10:00 AM Friday, June 20, 2014 at Augusta Memorial Park by Pastor Jan Owen.
Military rites will be provided by American Legion Post 340.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Thursday, June 19, 2014 at the Waynesboro Chapel of Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes.
