I was so saddened to hear of Johns passing.There are very few people in life we will meet,who will leave a lasting impression on our heart.John was one for sure.I knew he could have been a multimillionaire,he had the talent,means and work ethic.I also knew it wasn't all about money.He did so many jobs at cost and many he absorbed himself,way too much charity work by any business standard,He always let us slide w/deadline  for ads (so Club could reap the $)He was always about Kid's!.He was a generous,careing&exceptional human being a Realy GOOD man.In spite of how ill he was he came into the shop and produuced one St.Brendan's Galic Football Club's~ most beautiful journals ever.(14 years)It will not be the same,I know I am not the only one to feel the great void.My prayers are w/his family & friends.I know he is happily smiling(w/that contagious smile) down from Heaven....

My prayers are with John and his family since having heard about his passing. I knew John through his wonderful printing work. He always found a way to do a little extra, a little more than necessary... helping us get the colors just right or helping me decide on different aspects of a project. The results were always the best - beautiful quality printing! Although many of my print jobs were for charitable organizations of a different religion from his, he always handled the jobs with loving care and spoke to me with the greatest respect and interest in our projects. John's love for all of God's creation was always evident and even though we never met in person and all my interactions with him were over the phone, I always felt so good after talking with him, he seemed to find such joy and humor in life. I will miss his wonderful, friendly voice. I'm very sure that he is in a place of joyousness with his Beloved Lord...

John Spear my uncle and very close family member. John was a wonderful & great person! He was always there for his family & his friends! For many years I worked at print shop and did snow removal tasks including snow shoveling his roof and number of other tasks. Uncle John was dear friend & loyal family member. I'm very saddened and heartbroken to have lost a close & beloved family member & friend. John Spear was a great & wonderful & very caring person! To lose someone you're close to is very hard and extremely tough! John Spear will be sorely missed by his family & friends! He's touched some many lives and I am grateful & blessed to have been a part of his life!

I grew up with John Spear and his sister, Margie and remember the family as hard working and faithful in their service to God.  Now living in Virginia, I so looked forward to John's column, "Just Wandering 'Round,"  I always appreciated John's reminiscences of the Washingtonville I knew growing up in the 1940's and 50's.  He kept those special days alive in our memories, for they were, indeed, precious in the closeness we knew in the village of only 800.  John's tireless energy radiated in all the events he covered.  I know it must have been hard for him to cut back after his illness.  But what an indomitable spirit he had - persevering in spite of his suffering!  John, you were, and always will be an inspiration to us all, never giving up, always giving the last full measure.  You had gifts of talent, caring, and action. Thank you for your immeasurable contributions to the community and environs.  May God comfort your precious family, knowing you are now gloriously home with your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

      Our deepest sympathy to you. We have wonderful memories of John. Our daughters played CYO basketball and helped with the building of the CYO building . We have been neighbors for forty plus years.We will miss his many trips passing our house and his great smile.This town has lost one of its best . Our prayers go out to you . I feel very blessed to have known John. He has a great heart and was always patient with us. John will be missed for the work relationship we had. When I think of Mr. Spear, I think of a man that gave so much to St. Mary's CYO.  The endless times he would allow us to use the gym to practice "just don't turn on the heat and make sure you turn off the lights. Don't forget to lock door behind you..." he would say.  I can say with confidence that my high school teammates, sister (Alicia) and I would not have been the basketball players that we became without Mr. Spear's efforts and the creation of the St. Mary's CYO.  Thank you to a selfless man that tirelessly gave to a cause that positively impacted more lives than he will ever know.  You will be missed.

John is a fine example of "salt of the earth".  What a witness he is to his family and community of a devout Catholic man.  His many kindnesses and good deeds went unnoticed...however when he is entering in the Kingdom may the angels be singing his praises.  God bless Mary and John's family at this difficult time.

I have known John for forty-plus years.  He was my coach for travel CYO.  I went on to coach as my daughters played in the program and every year during the awards ceremony John would tell the crowd about a game I played in.  We were losing by 1 pt. and I was fouled with seconds left.  I was not the best foul shooter, but I made both to win the game.  I would be a little embarrassed as he told this story, but in hindsight I realize it showed how much he cared, to remember a game 20 years prior and want to share it.  John will be missed by many Washingtonville residents, myself included.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.  Rest in peace John.  Darlena Decker-Geyer

I was so sad to hear the news of John's passing.  Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for all he did for the countless children through the CYO.  I don't know how we would have made it through all those long winters without basketball to keep our boys busy.  We have wonderful memories of those days.  Thank you John for your dedication to our community.  My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to the Spear family.

I met John in the 60's when I was in high school.  We had a tour of where he worked with the Orange County Post in town.  It looked like a lot of hard work.He was more than willing to go to a lot of functions to take pictures and get them in the paper.  I then started going to St.Mary's bingo in 1983 and saw John at bingo every Sunday in the office. He always gave his time to help people and seems like his work was endless.  What an inspiration he was to so many people. All the long hours he put in.  Condolences to all the Spear family, especially to Mary. John will be missed by many.

John Spear and the village of Washingtonville are synonomous.  How lucky we were to have him touch so many peoples lives thru so many different ways, but especially thru the CYO program.  My sons enjoyed the program immensely.  They made good friends and learned many lessons.  As a parent I worked very hard on my volunteer level, but witnessing how hard John worked and sacrificed to make the program work year after year and the time and devotion he gave to it and the families, was inspirational.  

I admired his devotion as a Catholic and I am sure that he was welcomed into heaven with open arms. 

Rest in peace John, and thank you.

Mary and family, my heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. There are not enough words to describe what a difference John made in my life , which all began from  that 1st girls CYO basketball team that he started way back in 1969!  He was an exceptionall person, who I will never forget.  May he rest peacefully in the arms of our Lord!

John was such a wonderful man, always had a smile on his face. I met him at St.Mary's bingo and he was always rushing around, everyone there loved him, he will be missed. Rest in peace.

I feel lucky to have known John Spear. I became acquainted thru the CYO when my son Andy played basketball and was on the traveling team. I always felt John should have gotten a HERO award for his tireless attention to the community, the CYO and all our children. My condolences to Mary and family.
