McCLURE WILLIAM P. McCLURE (Age 91) A retired lawyer and lobbyist who specialized in tax issues, Bill died December 17, 2016 in Bethesda, MD. A resident of Bethesda, he was born in Washington, graduated from St. Albans School, and served as 1st Lieutenant, US Army, Infantry, on General Douglas MacArthur's staff in the Pacific Theater during WWII. After the war, he obtained his BS in 1949 from the Wharton School of Commerce and Finance, University of Pennsylvania. He received his J.D. and LL.M degrees from George Washington University in 1951 and 1954, respectively, and studied post-graduate at The Hague Academy of International Law in 1952. Bill was in private practice for over 40 years in Washington at McClure & Trotter, later McClure, Trotter & Mentz, and White & Case. He was active in civic and charitable matters. He served as Co-Chairman of the D.C. Division of the Crusade Against Cancer, American Cancer Society, in 1966-1967. He was an active supporter of the Smithsonian's National Zoo, helping to raise funds for the panda habitat at the zoo and cheetah facility in Front Royal, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, and his alma mater, Wharton School of Commerce and Finance. A former member of Columbia Country Club, Bill served on its Board of Governors and chaired its Tennis Committee. He was also a member of the Metropolitan Club. A passionate azalea gardener, Bill took pride in the 350 azaleas that surrounded his Bethesda home. His survivors include four daughters, Marilyn A. Campbell of Springfield, VA and Helen P. McClure of Lakewood, CO from his first marriage to Mary Alexander, Elizabeth R.B. McClure of Bethesda from his marriage to Elizabeth Bellingrath and Melinda G. McClure of Arlington, VA from his marriage to Linda Geoghegan, who also survives him; three siblings, Joan McNamara of Middletown, MD, Arthur A. of Pompano Beach, FL and John E. McClure, Jr. of St. Augustine, FL; and three grandchildren, Heather L. Campbell of Springfield, Ian D. Campbell of Falls Church, VA and Austin I. McClure of Arlington. Relatives and friends are invited to call at Joseph Gawler's Sons, Inc., 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC on Friday, January 27, 2017 from 5 until 8 p.m. A Memorial Mass at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament and interment at Arlington National Cemetery will occur at a later date.
