On Friday May 28, 2021 Robert Francis Royce, age 97 left this earth to go home to friends and family. Bob was a well-known community participant in Georgetown as the owner of Dumbarton Pharmacy for nearly four decades. He also was active in community service in Montgomery County, MD where he lived most of his adult life. Born June 14, 1923 and raised in Washington, DC he attended DC Public Schools throughout his youth participating in the band and in civic organizations. Upon graduation in 1941 he immediately enlisted in the US Army, passionately dedicated to serving and protecting his country during WWII. He served his tour of duty with the 87th Infantry Golden Acorn Division in France and Germany, participated in the Battle of the Bulge, and returned home 3.5 years later. He was decorated with the Distinguished Unit Badge, the Silver Star, 3 Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge with 2 clusters, Good Conduct Medal, and 3 occupation ribbons.Bob graduated from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, then located in downtown Baltimore, in 1951. He went to work at Morgan's Pharmacy, at 3001 P Street, NW where he worked for nearly two decades. He married Jeanne E. Eastman and together they raised their family of seven children in Bethesda, MD.In the late 1960's Bob and his partner, Harold Sugar, opened Dumbarton Pharmacy at 3146 Dumbarton Street, NW. Bob was a touchstone of that community engaging with neighbors, customers, and their families. He has lived the past three years at The Villages of Rockville in Rockville, MD and died peacefully in his sleep.Bob leaves behind three sons, Bill, Michael and Richard and three daughters, Deborah, Leah, and Barbara as well as 20 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A Memorial service will be held at Joseph Gawler's Sons, 5130 Wisconsin Ave., NW, Washington, DC on July 6, 2021 at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers please offer donations to a US Military Veteran's organization of your choice.
