Entered into his peaceful eternal rest on September 13, 2016. Beloved son of the late Congressman Charles Whalen (Dayton, Ohio) and his wife Barbara. Survived by his wife Katherine Zoe Andrews and their dog Lucy, three brothers: Chip, Dan and Ted, and two sisters: Anne (McLindon) and Mary (Scherer). Joe was a favorite uncle of his many nieces and nephews who always enjoyed his great sense of humor, youthfulness, love of sports and zest for life. A former student at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and the University of Dayton, he was a sportswriter for the Washington Post and Sports Editor of the West Chester, PA Daily Local.
A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at Noon on September 20, 2016 at the Church of the Little Flower, 5607 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, MD. The family will receive friends at the church starting at 11am. Interment will be in the family plot in Dayton, Ohio.
