Born in California in 1945, he spent his early years moving around the country as a Navy brat. His family settled in Alexandria, but he soon was off to West Point with the goal of serving his country. He then received a Master of Science in the Foreign Service degree from Georgetown University (1972) and a Juris Doctorate from Catholic University School of Law (1975).
He worked for Congressman Wright Patman before becoming Counsel to the Inspector General of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve for 24 years. He then served as General Counsel for the Federal Housing Finance Board. These positions continued his goal of serving his country.
He was married for fifty years to Patricia Ann Johnson, who survives him. Other survivors include his sister Grace Lorraine Jorgenson Deem (Jack), his nephew Jack Deem III (Alexandra) and niece Mayjean (Laura), sister-in-law Barbara Johnson Hill (John) their daughter Katherine and her daughter; and their brother-in-law John Johnson (Jan) and their children Ryan Johnson (Chenise) and Colleen Skay (John) and their children.
He had an abiding interest in the law as a beautiful thing; in fishing, particularly with his West Point classmates; and in bourbon, leaving behind a stash that will far outlast any relatives’ life expectancy.
Friends are welcome to Joseph Gawler’s Sons December 28th from 5 to 7 PM for a wake. Information on services at Arlington National Cemetery to come in the future.
