It is with great sadness we announce the unexpected passing of Charis Marie Nastoff, who left us on November 20, 2023, at the age of 65. She was a cherished member of our family, a dear friend to many, and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born on August 7th, 1958, in Manhattan, New York, Charis was the daughter of loving parents Daniel and Lois Nastoff (Deceased.) She is survived by her twin brother Daniel Nastoff and his wife Helinah, her sister Lois Nastoff, and sister Sharon Bourke and her husband David. Also, nieces and nephews; Lauren Loper, Hyde Walker, Campbell Walker, Nicole Wagner, David Martin, Daniel Martin, Austin Chester, Dr. Kendall Bourke, and Conner Bourke. She was living in Bethesda, Maryland at the time of her passing.
Charis grew up in Mclean, VA but spent many years overseas as her father, a foreign service officer, had assignments in Turkey, Pakistan, and Israel, hence her love of travel from an early age. She graduated from Ohio University in 1980 with a degree in Political science.
She eventually followed in her father’s footsteps in government service and became a Contracting Officer at USAID. For over 20 years she dedicated her life to her work and enjoyed assignments to posts such as El Salvador, Jordan, Peru, and Africa, to name only a few.
She was known for her professionalism, exceptional skills, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence. Those who worked closely with her were familiar with Charis’ generous and thoughtful spirit. Her love of her career and helping newcomers settle into overseas locations, not to mention her love of shopping and exploring new foods. She loved organizing activities no matter where she happened to be, everything from cookie exchanges and gum drop tree decorating to shipping Girl Scout Cookies overseas and office decorating contests.
She especially cherished the time she spent with family/friends and her grandnieces and nephews. She was always thinking up “activities” making gingerbread houses or parfait. She often sent gifts from the countries she visited or lived…we are all blessed with those reminders.
Charis was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She lived a life filled with determination and resilience and was inspiring in that way. Her independent spirit helped define her character.
We extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time. Your love and kindness have provided us with strength and comfort.
During this difficult time, let us remember the remarkable person Charis was and find solace in knowing that her spirit will continue to live on in our hearts and memories.
With love and remembrance,
The Nastoff Family
