Going through some old papers and I found a paper that I submitted to Professor Linden in 1975.  Decided to google him found that he had passed in 2012.  Just like to say that he was my favorite professor at GW and he was a good and kind man.  Our Lord Jesus has a special place for him in Heaven and may his family carry his legacy of kindness.

I got to know Carl two years ago by sitting next to him at 6:00 am at Starbucks. I didn't know what I was getting into! Carl was one of the kindest, gentlest, wisest, most interesting and influential people I have never met.  The world is at a loss without Carl; but he passed on to us his gentle, humble love, and a wonderful faith which which leaves us better, stronger and our our lives more full.  Thankyou Carl and thankyou to the Linden family for sharing him with us.

It was truly a pleasure to know Professor Linden through the Institute of European, Russian and Eurasian Studies.  I'll miss his kind words and warm smile as well as his lively intellect and gracious presence.  With deep sympathy for your loss.

It's impossible to overstate how much Carl's far-sighted leadership and friendly presence meant to everyone who cares about the C&O Canal.  His insights, wit, and good cheer were unfailing, whether along the towpath or around a meeting table.  He is greatly missed, but his memory will always be an inspiration.  His family has my sincere sympathy.

Carl's departure is a terrible loss for the C&O Canal Association.  He was such a large part of the institutional memory of the organization.  I will miss his wisdom, his perspective, and his warm, welcoming presence at board meetings.

I got to know Carl through spending 15 hours on a train with him and Ken Rollins en route to Montreal to attend a World Canals Conference.  Both were gracious, interesting and superb raconteurs.  Always upbeat, friendly, and welcoming Carl will be missed tremendously.  Condolences to the extended Linden family.

I remember Carl as a devout parishioner at Our Lady of Victory Church. It was a joy to see him at the 8am Sunday Mass or 7am weekday Masses and 8:30am Saturday Masses and rosary. He was always kind and ready to give me a ride to the corner if I needed it. What a gentle and honorable man. I am sure he will be missed by many.  Mrs. Maria Ferrara

Carl was a good friend to me during out outings on the C & O canal and the Potomac River. Glad I got to know him. Sorry I was not able to come over to the viewings.

My deepest sympathies to the Linden family.  Professor Linden was a great teacher and his seminars were the best classes I had at GWU 33 years ago.

My deepest condolences to the Linden family. We shared the same academic mentor, Wolfgang Kraus, and I recall how devoted Carl was to the truth both as a teacher and as a thinker

I knew Carl mainly as a champion and savvy steward of the C&O Canal. In cheerful collaboration with Bill Davies, Ken Rollins and others, he worked tirelessly to protect the park's resources and teach others about its history and charms. He was a man of uncommon wisdom and generosity who will be missed along the towpath and in every other facet of his life. My sympathies are with the Linden family in this time of loss.

Carl was a contributor and supporter of our St Vincent de Paul (SVdP) Conference at his Parish, Our Lady of Victory. He was such a caring and generous person in his dealings. I remember his enthusiasm at the February meeting of SVdP. He had volunteered for the outreach efforts with senior citizens. He was definitely looking forward to continuing his legacy of service. I'll miss him.

Carl Linden was a former professor, mentor, and dear friend of mine.  He was a kind, gentle, good man -- as well as a brilliant person and I will miss him terribly.  Christina Shelton

Carl was the sweetest of men, full of compassion and kindness.  He was a great intellectual too and loved to discuss ideas.  A great lover of nature (and a so-so cook!).  What a joy to have known him.  We'll miss him.  Our deepest sympathy for his family.

Carl Linden was a genuine man of letters, an intellectual whose convictions were firm and rooted in his deep knowledge of philosophy and history. But he was never confrontational, always gentle and open for the views of others. I will miss his sense of humor, his curiosity about the world that made every conversation with Carl such a pleasure, his tact, and his loyalty. This is a terrible loss.

How pleasant it was to walk with Carl along the towpath and learn of his great knowledge of and  devotion to the canal.

It was such a pleasure to have known Carl. May he rest in peace.

Carl was such a wonderful man that reached out and helped to man.  He was such a dear friend of my uncle, Ken Rollins.  I talked to him often.  He touched so many lives.  May the Holy Spirit be there to comfort you during this time.

Carl was the most down-to-earth person, yet at the same time learned and erudite.  Example:  walking with me on the towpath near Four Locks, he began to discuss 17th cent. English philosopher John Locke's essay on civil government and liberty.  Left me bemused at this different image from the hiker/biker/paddler I knew. His passing leaves a hole in our lives, but we have great memories.

Carl was a good friend and Buddy. He was nice to be around. Earl Scruggs (Of Flatt & Scruggs) along with Sonny Deforge, Ken Rollins and Doug Faris are waiting for him at the pearly gates.

It is difficult to find words to express what a wonderful person Carl was, and the truest friend anyone could have to my Dad. May the many fond memories sustain his family and close friends.

My deepest sympathies to the Linden family on the passing of their loved one.  As secretary to the superintendent of the C&O Canal NHP, I got to know Carl very well.  What a wonderful, caring person. He will be greatly missed.
