Read, Sargeant Donald C., 96, has come to the END OF HIS WATCH Friday, March 25, 2016. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Carlson) Read to whom he was married 31 years before her passing in 1977. Born in Pawtucket, RI he was a son of the late Harold N. and Edith B. (Jarvis) Read.
Sgt. Read was a proud US Navy Veteran of WWII where he was a Ship’s Cook on the Battleship, USS Cates. He worked at General Cable, Brown & Sharpe and then he and his wife were co-owners of Read’s Pioneer Market in West Barrington. A police officer for the Barrington Police Department, he retired after 20 years of service in 1976. Spending much of his retirement on the golf course, he was also a member of the Free Masons Washington Lodge #3 and the International Order of Old Bastards (I.O.O.B.). West Barrington Men's Club. He is survived by his daughters, Donna Collins and her husband John of North Smithfield, Dorothy Provorse and her husband Neil of Cranston; four grandchildren, Casandra Gallant, Ginger Collins, Steven Collins and Tanya Ortiz; and eight great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Robert and Brigadier General Harold Read and Dorothy Martin, father of the late Deardre Read, grandfather of the late Heather Bonalewicz and dear friend of the late Jean Davis.
