Lorraine was born on May 19, 1927, in Fraser, Michigan to Vera and Ralph Ziegeler. She had two brothers, Daniel and David, and one sister, Sharron, who was 10 years younger than she. They moved to Coplin Ave. in Detroit and she attended St. Martin Elementary and High School nearby. There she met her future husband, Bernard Anthony Meier, who joined the US Navy after graduation and was sent to the Philippines in the final years of World War II. They were married in June, 1949 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church on Jefferson Ave. in Detroit because Bernard attended the University of Detroit majoring in international custom law.
They started a family which grew to nine children between 1950 and 1968. Lorraine would tell everyone that this was her proudest achievement. Meanwhile she created a beautiful home for her family and was very proud that she paid off the mortgages on two houses. She was an accomplished pianist and singer and loved the popular songs from the 30’s and 40’s. Lorraine made sure every birthday was an event and passed on to her children the joy of giving gifts. When the family camped in the Irish Hills, she cooked up chicken dinners and cake for dessert in her trusty electric frying pan.
Lorraine was a devout Catholic throughout her life. She worked hard under difficult financial conditions to send her children to Guardian Angels School in on the east side of Detroit. She sang in the parish choir and volunteered in the kitchen on Bingo nights. She led her family in the evening rosary and celebrated First Communions with large family parties.
With all the children in school, Lorraine held many receptionist jobs over the years till retiring from a child care nursery at 80. Always a hard worker who had a mind of her own but laughed easily, Lorraine built a busy and fulfilling life with her family, friends and community. She died peacefully at home. Her prayer for us: “My Christmas wish for all of you is goodness and mercy.”
Lorraine is survived by her children Bernadette (Bonnie) Meier (Ray Perry), Kristina Constantino (Peter), Elaine Prestel, Janice Adams (Walter), Laura Partain (Thomas), Valerie Carrithers (Larry) and Bernard (Joann). Lorraine is grandmother to 20 grandchildren who call her Nana and great-grandmother to 17 great-grandchildren who call her Gigi. Lorraine is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard and children Paul (Sharon) and Amy Andary (Martin).
Lorraine will lie In State on Saturday, December 18th at 12:30pm until the time of her Funeral Mass at 1:00pm at St. Anne Catholic Church, 32000 Mound Rd, Warren, MI 48092. Arrangements entrusted to the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home in Warren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lorraine's name are appreciated to Beaumont Hospice, 1975 Technology Dr. Suite J-120, Troy, MI 48083.
