Jerome Frank Boik, age 83, died Friday, December 21, 2018 at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. Jerry was born January 3, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, son of the late Harry Boik and the late Frances (nee: Wisniewski) Boik.Jerry, or "Butch" as he was affectionately known as a boy, was raised on Detroit's east side near 7 Mile and Van Dyke. While in his youth Jerry was a standout athlete playing both football and baseball. Following his schooling, Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean War. While in the Navy he learned many skills including diving and basic underwater demolition. He served aboard the USS H.J. Ellison and later was honorably discharged on November 30, 1954.Following his military service, Jerry returned home to Detroit and found employment with the J.L. Hudson's Department Store. Jerry was the consummate salesman and sold furniture among other items for Hudson's. Jerry worked for over 30 years before retiring.While in his younger years, Jerry played semi-professional football and baseball,...sometimes taking their team to play against the convicts in prisons around the state of Michigan. At the same time, while as a young man, Jerry met and married a single mother with three children, Christine, John, and Dennis, with whom he came to love as his own.Jerry was a hardworking man, a family man, and also a person with spiritual devotion and commitment to his catholic faith. Additionally, he had a deep affinity for Blessed Fr. Solanus Casey. Jerry loved the outdoors and enjoyed boating, hunting, and fishing. He loved to spend time at his cottage in Lexington, Michigan and fish out on the lake. Later in life events led Jerry to playing Poker or Pinochle with family and friends, or attending his grandchildren's functions and sporting events. He truly became the patriarch of the family. He will forever be remembered and cherished by everyone he has come to know.Jerry was the beloved husband of Sally Boik, and the dear step-father of Christine Cassisi, John (Elaine) Cassisi, and Dennis (Grace) Cassisi. He was the grandfather of Melissa (Ryan) Ahler, Lauren (Sean) Barber, Jenna Cassisi, Jennifer (Gary) Miller, and James M. Flannery II. He is also the great-grandfather of Austin, Katie, Abby, Jack, Maya, Autumn, Jordan, and the late Alexandria, and the late Jacob. Jerry is further survived by his niece, Susie (Don) Dewey, nephews, Bill Bandy and John Bandy. Jerry was preceded in death by his sister, Gerry Bandy. Visitation for Mr. Boik will be held Wednesday, December 26th from 3-9 pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile). Mr. Boik will lie in state on Thursday from 9:30 am until time of the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at St. Mary, Our Lady Queen of Families Catholic Church - St. Clement Campus in Center Line, Michigan. Celebrating the Funeral Liturgy will be Reverend Fr. Robert Bauer.
