Jacob Paul Scherer, age 90 of Sterling Heights, died Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, Michigan. He was born September 12, 1928 in Detroit, son of the late Stefan and the late Eva (nee: Dollinger) Scherer.
At 90 years old, Jacob enjoyed a full and happy life that was filled with love and friendship around every corner. Known more affectionately to all as “Jack,” he was both a loving husband and devoted father, and a true “family man” for the ages. Yet before he became a “family” man, Jack’s upbringing would prove that he was also a “gentleman,” as evidenced through the courting period he shared with the girl who would become his wife. It was in his teenage years that he met the young and beautiful Miss Marguerite “Marge” Eisbrenner, a girl that just happened to be working at a store next to the one in which he was employed,…of which the two establishments shared a common window. That magical window afforded these smitten teens the ability to make googly-eyes at each other as they managed their tasks and walked the path of a friendship in the making.
The day would come that Jack knew he wanted to take things to the dating level, but knew he was compelled to get her father’s permission first. (Yep,…that’s the way it was done back in the day,…or at least for the respectful boys.) So ask he did, and the permission he was seeking was granted with open arms. So with a courtship underway that would take them another two years into the future, their fairytale romance led them to the altar where they were married in the eyes of family and friends alike. They shared their vows, promised their love, and began their lives together as husband & wife,…a journey that would take them through the next 66 years together, until Marge’s passing on September 23, 2016.
For his career path, Jack decided to utilize his incredible skills with number crunching as he accepted a position with the Jenkins-Miller firm, and would ultimately follow them up north when they relocated the company. As time marched on and changes took their toll, Jack found himself accepting a new position,…this time as a Management Analyst for the Internal Revenue Service in Detroit. It is actually the place that he would work the longest throughout his career years.
When Jack was not at work and found a bit of “me time” on his hands, he was known for being an avid reader. First & foremost, there was his devotion to the morning newspaper. Being somewhat of a news enthusiast, Jack loved being informed about all things newsworthy,…and, of course, there was his beloved Sports section and the “Funnies.” But his daily paper was also known for feeding one of Jack’s other great passions,…solving the crossword puzzle. He loved his crosswords, and found great reward each time he saw them to completion.
As for a favorite pastime he loved sharing with Marge, each of them coveted those afternoons or evenings of inviting friends over to play some cards. Many times these friends were old school chums or simply friends from their childhood days,…which, of course, made it even more special. Though their game options were many, quite often the game of the day was either Pinochle or Euchre,…two favorites for sharing the evening with friends.
Like many guys out there, Jack had his sporting pleasures. Sports seemed to always be on his television. And though he could watch just about any of them, there was no question about his allegiance to his home teams, the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions. Jack was no fair-weather friend. His support and fanhood transcended the numerous times he held his head in his hands,…but that was “True Blue, Jack.”
Being a retiree from the federal government, Jack shared a membership and fraternal alliance with a group of his fellow work mates within the “Last Wednesday Gang of Retired Federal Employees,” a group of kindred spirits and fellow members with whom he thoroughly enjoyed sharing their monthly meetings together. It was an opportunity to swap news, stories, but most of all to keep the flames of friendship kindled for the long haul.
Yet of all the pastimes and activities he enjoyed the most, his love of bowling and golfing were sacrosanct. They were truly untouchable. On the bowling front, he was honored and pleased to share the lanes with many great competitors and friends,…all in search of that Holy Grail, the coveted 300 Game. Rolling a 299 on a few occasions, he simply could not breach that envelope, but always had a great time trying. As for golfing, that was probably the pinnacle of them all. A sunny day, good friends, some shiny irons, and the dream of a Hole-in-One all made for some of the finest friendship moments Jack enjoyed in life. In his earlier days, Jack used to love the occasional weekend golf outings that would take him to some of Michigan’s greatest courses, and afford him some of those precious memories that were made with his fellow golfing buddies. And the fun was made even greater because they all shared the glories of camping in the process,…in campers, not tents,…just sayin!
Jack will also be remembered for his devout faith and allegiance to the Catholic Church for most all of his life. Married to a prayer warrior, he and Marge were devoted parishioners and raised five boys to revere the Lord as well. Jack was also proud to be a 60 year member of the church’s, Knights of Columbus, a fraternal order of Godly men who give charitably of their time and ministry, and who build each other up in the faith. Over time, Jack would attain to the level of 3rd Degree as a fellow Knight at the Fr. Solanus Casey Council, #3797 in Roseville, Michigan.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Jack cherished his family and was a great mentor to all. He was infused with a wonderful sense of humor, a strong and abiding faith, and a desire to leave his mark in life,…and that he did. He leaves a storehouse of treasured memories behind for all to embrace with each reflection shared. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally.
Jacob was the beloved husband of the late Marguerite. Dearest father of Douglas, David (Diane), Thomas (Lynnette), Bruce (Peggy), and Michael (Anne). Loving grandfather of Matthew, Anna, Zoe, and great-grandfather of Madelyn. Devoted brother of the late Steven.
