Donald William Helzer, age 77, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2024. He was born on July 16, 1947, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, to George and Mary (nee Pelka) Helzer. He was one of eleven children.
Don was a simple man with a profound love for family and nature. An avid outdoorsman, he cherished his time spent hunting and reveling in the beauty of the great outdoors. He especially loved spending time outside at his beloved property in Gladwin, Michigan. The peacefulness of nature was his sanctuary, and he found joy in every moment spent outside.
He was known for his infectious sense of humor and his ability to light up a room. He had a unique talent for making everyone around him feel special and valued, often joking and sharing laughter with friends and family. His warm spirit drew people to him, and he was always the life of the gathering.
At home, Don enjoyed sitting on his porch, watching the world go by. He dubbed himself the “friendly neighborhood watch,” greeting everyone who passed by with a warm smile and a friendly hello. This simple act of kindness created countless friendships within his community, and he will be remembered for his ability to become friends with just about anyone.
Beloved husband to the late Helen (nee Grafmiller) Helzer; dear father of Michael (Brenda) Helzer, George (Olivia) Helzer, Theresa Pope-Helzer, Pamela Grafmiller, Terry (Rose) Grafmiller, Paula (Augie) Seggie, and Billy (Cindy) Grafmiller; cherished grandfather of Hailey (Joe), John, Juli, Cameron, Carson, Kate, Amanda, Tyler, Nick (Melissa), Rick (Renae), Eric, and Dan; proud great-grandfather of August, Cecilia, Joanna, and Nevaeh; adored brother of Floyd (Kathleen) Helzer; co-parent with Mary Binge; loved by his cat companion, Sassy. Preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Helzer; and his siblings Frank, Joseph, Edward, Barbara, Geraldine, Joann, Gladys, Melvin, and Harold.
Don’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Per Don’s wishes, no formal funeral services will take place, and he will be cremated.
