James Sherman Smith Sr.

James Smith passed peacefully into eternal sleep with his family by his side on July 10, 2021. James was preceded in death by his parents Sherman C. Smith and Joanna C Smith of Clinton MD. James is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Lilly Smith. Daughter Kristine Thomas (Mike) of Shady Side MD. Son James Smith Jr (Jennifer) of LaPlata MD. Six grandchildren: Brandon, John, Lorraine, Dustin, Dalton and Liza. One sister, Linda Worthington (Dan) of Oscoda MI. Nephew Timothy Worthington (Colleen).

James worked 32 years for Prince Georges County Board of Education as a glazer. He was also a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows where he joined Forest Lodge in 1981. He was Grand Patriarch 1989-1990, Department Commander 1990-1991, Grand Master 1995-1996, President of Assembly 2019-2020, and was a Charter Member and Advisor of the Red Beret Jr Lodge.

He enjoyed hunting, NASCAR, boating, and taking cruises with his wife and fellow lodge members. After retiring, James and Lilly enjoyed spending time at Lake Gaston with their family and friends He was an avid supporter of his grandchildren in their sports endeavors.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 20th 2021 from 4 to 7 PM at Huntt Funeral Home in Waldorf MD. Services will be Wednesday 21, 2021 at 12 PM with interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton MD. A celebration of James’ life will follow at Faith United Methodist Church, 15769 Livingston Rd, Accokeek MD.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in James’ honor to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
