John W. Stokes, Jr. 91, of Waco, died Monday, December 13, 2010 in a local hospital. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, December 16, 2010 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 800 North New Road, with Pastor Paul Krupicka officiating. Interment will be 3:00 p.m. in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Cemetery of Prairie Hill Community in Brenham, Texas. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to service.
John was born September 15, 1919 in Kenney, Austin County, Texas to John W. Sr. and Emma (Reinecke) Stokes. He married Elizabeth Reue March 6, 1948 in Houston, Texas. John attended elementary school in Kenney, and graduated from Bellville High School in 1939. He graduated from Draughan’s Business College, Armed Force Institute and attended University of Houston. He served in the Army from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He worked as an accountant in Houston retiring in 1985.
He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife, Elizabeth; son, John W. Stokes III; and brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Nita Stokes.
He is survived by his son, James M. Stokes of Waco; brother, Earl Stokes; nephew, Thomas Stokes, both of Houston; sister-in-law, Edna Moeller of Brenham; and nephews, Dr. David Reue, of Austin and Judge Matthew Reue of Brenham.
