He is survived by his loving wife Kathy, daughter Sara Murdick, and granddaughter, Sydney Murdick in addition to his sister Susan Lehr and brothers Tom Brown (Alice) and Mark Brown (Sonja). He also leaves several cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. While in college and working at Stony Creek Lodge between Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, Steve met the love of his life, Kathy. They enjoyed almost 53 years of marriage. Steve was devoted to his family and loved any opportunity to be together.
Growing up, Steve attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Turlock then left home to go to St. Pius X Catholic High School in Galt, CA followed by two years at St. Patrick’s College in Mountain View, CA. He graduated with honors from San Jose State University and achieved a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Sacramento State University. Steve was an educator for forty years, teaching in the Galt Joint Union School District, as the principal of St. Aloysius School in Tulare, CA, and as a principal and district office administrator in the Corcoran Joint Union School District. Upon retiring from education he became the Executive Director of the Recreation Association of Corcoran where he served until his passing.
Steve was a lifelong Boy Scout and after attaining the rank of Eagle Scout he went on to become the director of BSA Camp Mirimichi at Huntington Lake for five summers where he positively impacted both staff and the many scout troops who enjoyed their week at scout camp under his leadership.
Over the years, Steve was involved in many community organizations and enjoyed helping wherever he could, however he could. He had a lifetime passion for fishing of any kind, but was an avid and accomplished fly fisherman. He introduced many children to fishing at the family cabin in Big Meadows and was thrilled to see great-nephew Zach Weaver continue the sport. His love for the outdoors drew him to the Buck Rock Foundation where he trained and became a volunteer fire lookout, serving mainly at Buck Rock Lookout in Sequoia National Forest.
Services will be October 23, 2024 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1404 Hanna Ave, Corcoran, CA at 10:00 am followed by a celebration of Steve’s life at 11:30 am at the Recreation Association of Corcoran, 900 Dairy Ave., Corcoran, CA. Everyone is welcome to attend either or both.
The family appreciates in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made in his name to either the Buck Rock Foundation, P.O. Box 540, Squaw Valley, CA 93675 or the Recreation Association of Corcoran, 900 Dairy Ave, Corcoran, CA 93212 (note “Youth Sports Scholarships” on memo line).
