Tom was born in Houston, Texas in 1935. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judy Kane Moore, and his son Thomas Christopher Moore of Falls Church, VA, and his daughter Kathleen Kane Moore of Atlanta, GA.
His family moved to Long Island, New York after WWII, and he graduated from Manhasset High School in 1953. He attended Rice University, and after graduation in 1958, was commissioned in the U.S. Navy Reserve. He served twelve years on active and active reserve duty, and retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1970.
While serving at Little Creek Amphibious Base, he met Judy Kane of Virginia Beach, and they married upon his release from active duty. They moved to Houston, where Tom began his career with IBM, setting up large commercial computer installations. Their two children, Thomas and Katie, were born in Houston.
The latter part of Tom's career with IBM was spent in customer education development, and working with early versions of multi-media applications during the 1980's. He authored a well-received book on multimedia development, and consulted with IBM after his retirement in 1989.
In 1994, Tom and Judy moved to Virginia Beach. They had been avid sailors for years, and bought a yacht for boating on the Chesapeake. Tom joined Virginia Beach Power Squadron, served as commander, and attained the highest grade of Senior Navigator. He instructed Advanced Piloting and Celestial Navigation for the Squadron, and earned a Coast Guard License as Master of 100 Ton Vessels.
He was a member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, and served in the bicycle ministry that provides transportation for the homeless population. He also performed as "Cap'n Tom," providing musical entertainment for local senior facilities with his guitar and harmonica.
Tom said he lived a long, productive and happy life, supported by his family, but mostly by the love of Judy who has been his life-long partner in all he has been able to accomplish.
A memorial service with military honors will be held Friday, April 14, 2023, 12pm noon at Princess Anne Memorial Park in the Peace Chapel, located at 1110 N Great Neck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23454.
