Russell was born in Portsmouth, VA and resided in Virginia Beach all of his life. He attended Bayside High School and served as a Journeyman Electrician with Mike's Electrical Service. He loved music and taught himself to play guitar, drums and wrote his own songs, music and lyrics. He bought his own house and car by himself at a young age and used to love hanging out with friends and traveling with family. He also enjoyed weekends at Harpers Ferry and New River Gorge in West Virginia and canoeing down the James River.
Survivors include his parents Michael and Cheryl Lynn Gilchrest, a son Russell James Gilchrest, Jr., a brother Michael Frederick Gilchrest and his wife Margaret; several cousins, aunts and uncles and extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 21. Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home by The Rev. Robert F. Pittman. The visitation will begin at 1p.m. and the service will start at 2p.m. The interment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park once the service in the chapel is completed.
