JC was born in Norfolk, Virginia to Foster and Ethel Spruill. As a child the family traveled up and down the east coast following his father’s Coast Guard career, finally settling in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was a graduate of Princess Anne High School and the Newport News Shipbuilding Apprentice School. After completing his apprenticeship, he went on to work for Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock from which he retired as a Master Shipbuilder after 42 years. An avid outdoorsman his entire life, he loved to hunt, camp, and fish and passed his love of the outdoors on to his children and grandchildren. He Married the love of his life, Ella, in 1970 and they raised four children together.
JC will be missed by many family and friends. He is survived by his wife Ella Spruill and their four children: Larry Spruill, Laurie Mitsules, Foster Spruill, and Julie McManus. JC will also be missed by his five grandchildren: Cameron and Logan McManus, Gabrielle and Danielle Mitsules, and Mason Spruill. In addition to his immediate family, he was loved by many extended family members and life-long friends.
JC’s wishes for cremation were followed and a celebration of life with his family and many friends will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 224 S. Military Highway, Norfolk Va.
