Florentino Deguzman Singson Jr., a retired Chief Hospital Corpsman, distinguished businessman, amateur fisherman, and beloved husband and father was born November 15, 1955 in Nabaccayan, Gattaran, Cagayan, located in the Northern Philippine Islands. Lovingly known as “Bong” by his close family and friends, Florentino passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2020 after a long and bravely-fought fight against COVID-19.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Santo Tomas, and studied engineering at the University of the East before being chosen to join the United States Navy at Subic Bay— with only three individuals being recruited from a pool of more than three hundred applicants. He started his career as a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy in 1979, and retired as a Chief in 1999 after 20 years spent serving his country.
After his retirement, Bong worked tirelessly in building his small business, renting out his property to the communities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Suffolk. He possessed a passion for real estate investment, but even more so, he had a strong dedication and affinity for treating his tenants and associates fairly and as he would want to be treated. He attributed his honestly and business acumen to his father, Florentino Sr., whom Bong assisted with his tobacco business throughout his youth.
In his free time, Bong enjoyed fishing, crabbing, cultivating his back-yard garden, going camping in his RV, and travelling all around the world. He loved music, sunsets at Singson Cove, and cooking dinner for his family every night. More than anything, he loved sharing these moments of celebration with his family and friends.
He married the love of his life, Flory in 1983. They shared more than thirty beautiful years together, and were blessed with three beautiful and caring daughters Paula, Florina, and Francine.
Bong is survived by his siblings Joel, Manny, Jane, Russell, and Lyndon, as well as his adopted sisters Bea, Nanette, and Carmela.
A memorial service including military honors will be held to celebrate Bong's life at a later date.
