Melvin L. Cook passed away on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on August 7, 1951, in Wichita, KS, Melvin lived a life dedicated to service, both to his country and in his professional career.
After serving as a medic in the US Army, Melvin pursued a career in nursing, challenging the RN boards. He became a distinguished ER nurse and extended his expertise into nurse education, ER management, and hospital informatics.
Melvin's adventurous spirit was reflected in his past hobbies, such as scuba diving and snorkeling. More recently, before his illness, he enjoyed karaoke and visiting theme parks. However, his greatest joy came from being a devoted "Girl Dad," playing music, singing, and spending cherished family time.
He was the beloved son of the late Clarenzia Alphonso Cook and Mary Ellen Evans Cook. Melvin is survived by his loving spouse, Barbara C. Cook, and his cherished daughters, Angela C. Cook and Breanna E. Cook. He is also survived by his younger sister, Claudette Cook, nephew, Casey Cook, and niece, Makia Cook.
One of Melvin's most treasured memories was a road trip with his daughters to Paso Robles and Santa Barbara in 2022. His dedication to his family was evident as he could often be found in the audience or on the sidelines of his girls' performances and sporting events. Even as they grew into adulthood, he continued to support them by proofreading assignments, quizzing them, or simply providing encouragement and reminders to complete their work.
Melvin was cared for in his final days by his compassionate LVN Home Health Nurse, Miryam Avraham. He will be laid to rest in a private interment at Riverside National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Melvin’s memory. You can contribute via https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=8454600&fr_id=154020&pg=personal
Melvin's legacy of love, dedication, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him.
