George Lee Merriman died peacefully at home at the age of 79 from complications of Parkinson’s disease on April 2, 2019. He has been a much loved resident of the High Desert for a least fifty years and will be sorely missed.
George was born in Aurora, Missouri, on February 11, 1940 to Dwight and Madge Merriman. He and his family soon moved to California and settled in Pasadena. After graduating from Pasadena High School, George earned his A.A. Degree from Pasadena City College and then enlisted in the U.S Navy in 1962, where he served honorably and proudly.
After his service, George moved to the High Desert where he held several positions, eventually joining the California E.D.D. where he worked for the over twenty-five years until his retirement in 2000.
George was an optimistic and caring man, a lover of western history, many cherished dogs, locally-filmed movies, classic trains and league bowling, as well as his friends from our local Parkinson’s Support Group.
He was preceded in death by his partner, Donald Kurtzman, and his parents. Though he had no children of his own, “Grandpa” and “Uncle” George will be remembered fondly by the Kurtzman and Sweet clans and his countless loving friends.
A celebration of George’s life will be held at a date and time to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in George’s name to your favorite animal welfare charity would be appreciated. Thank you.
