I meet Werner 1991 when I joined his research group as a PhD student. I knew he was an outstanding scientist. I learned that he was also was an outstanding human being, with a great sense of humour and wit and his great love of classical music. 
There is one special memory: During an animated discussion about some calculations his wife Inge called: The tenderness with which he answered the call and spoke to Inge showed me a side I didn't know of him and that deeply touched me. 

And this is how I remember Werner: Always good for a surprise,  much deeper than you thing and with a very big heart. 

Werner was a genius, plain and simple. He was a fantastic teacher that unlocked the secrets of the cosmos with incredible clarity. He was a gentleman and had more integrity than anyone I have met in my life. Werner was a great Canadian and a great man. I had the exceptional privilege to have had him as a teacher at two different times in my life. He challenged you to become better and did not accept compromise. Ever. 

For his family.
We are so sad to hear the news that Werner has died. What a lovely person he was. I spoke to him a few months ago and he was sounding his usual sweet self.
We met him and Inge quite a long time ago in Cambridge (UK) and have been in touch ever since. Inge shared her poetry with me and Werner and I shared a love of music.
John was a professor in DAMTP.
More recently communication was harder with both of us suffering from deafness but we tried! He was always teasing me (Mary) that he reached 90 first.
   He always spoke with such fondness of his family. We will miss him.
   Our sympathy and best wishes, John and Mary Taylor.

It was a pleasure, an honour and a privilege to know Werner.  Unlike many arrogant scientists of lesser talent,  he was gentle and approachable and fundamentally decent.  He enriched our lives and will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the family for this tragic loss. Professor Israel was a giant of General Relativity whose seminal contributions furthered the research of future generations. I was fortunate to communicate with him over Researchgate Website few years ago and he was very kind and generous with his appreciation for one of our works which used and cited one of his significant earlier work. A legendary scientist and a kind human being which is rare. Rest in peace Professor.
