He is survived by Louise, his high-school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, his son Rod (Carrie) and daughter Heather (Michael). Son Gary is dearly missed, and his whereabouts unknown. Ted has always been so proud of his grandchildren- Chase, Tanner, Beau, and Leona. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Jack, and daughter-in-law Carolina.
Ted was born on the outskirts of Edmonton, Alberta where his grandfather, father, and uncles worked for the NAR railway. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and enjoyed playing in the wilderness and being around trains and cars.
During high school at Vic High in Edmonton, Ted made the track and basketball teams and enjoyed provincial wins in both. He loved playing football. Good coaching fueled his drive and talent in football during high school, while on the Huskies Junior Team, and when playing for the Golden Bears at the U of A. Ted was invited to try out with the Edmonton Eskimos, and in 1962 was a hometown boy who made the team. That year he was named Rookie of the Year in the Western Conference.
While at U of A, Ted completed a BSc. in Civil Engineering, class of 1964. He had positions with Alberta Department of Public Works and Alberta Provincial Parks until 1971, when there came an opportunity to move to Victoria and for a career with BC Provincial Parks. He and Louise, embracing the adventure, moved with their 3 children to Victoria. Ted became a P.Eng. during this time and was happily employed in the BC Provincial Parks Planning Branch for the next 26 years, combining his love for the outdoors with his love of research, planning, and design.
In Victoria, Ted always kept up with fitness at the YMCA or Gordon Head Rec Centre and he was involved in his children’s and grandchildren’s sports, watching and coaching them in skills and strategy. Throughout his life, Ted had many interests: gardening, cars, landscape & housing design, fishing, hunting, travelling, planning reunions, genealogy and listening to CBC and all kinds of music. Ted was full of ideas and plans to the end. He will be missed by his family, his lifetime friend Bob, and by other dear relatives, friends and neighbors.
Ted will be interred at the Garden of Memories at First Memorial on Falise Drive in Victoria. A tribute to Ted will be held at a later date.
