Love to Debbie, Cathy, David, Barb (and families),    I had just seen the stunning photo of your mom at her 100th, only to then receive the sad news of her passing. I am so pleased to know, Debbie, that you had the privilege of having your mom living in your home these past 8 months. I have such rich memories of all those summers we spent together at Shawnigan as kids where Shirley was always the calm, hospitable presence in the midst of chaos and  fun. In your home during the pandemic, I have wonderful memories of your mom both at our family gatherings at shawnigan and later at the racquet club playing tennis. One of my special memories I will never forget was Shirley coming to visit me in our little  cottage on west Saanich rd just after we were married. She was a wonderfull ladyand matriarch of your family.. we will continue that friendship at the lake!

I am very sorry to learn of Mrs. Ellis' passing.  She was always Mrs. Ellis to me - her daughter Debbie is a lifelong and cherished friend of mine.  
Mrs. Ellis was always fun to spend time with.  She was witty and clever and she dearly loved Shawnigan Lake.  Every time I met her was a great encounter.  
My deep and sincere condolences to her family and friends.  She was one of a kind!
I love this picture of Shirley and my Corgi, Jolene.  They were very happy together on the patio at Shawnigan Lake.  

I feel very fortunate to be able to say that Shirley  Ellis was a great friend.    
She always made me feel very welcome in her home, and indeed in her life.     Shirley loved her little quips and zingy one-liners  -  and was well known for these !   We  all loved them too.   
To all of the Ellis family:   Shirley has left a unique place  in the world that won’t easily be filled.    But at the same time she has left us each a little bit richer in so many ways.   I’ll really miss her

Shirley was a wonderful woman.  Always so positive and warm and friendly, with a great sense of humour.  Memories start with Clay, Macfarlane, Ellis and Popham and continue with shawnigan lake connections.  Yes, remember well the rugby tea parties that teammate Paul describes.  RIP Shirley, you were an amazing matriarch.  

I will treasure the last 8 months of Mum's life while she was living with my husband and me.  This photo was taken on her 100th birthday with her favourite drink a martini.  If not a martini then a glass or two of red wine every night she would stand at the top of the stairs at 5:00 pm and say is it "wine time"?  She would come down on her stairlift and we would sit together and watch the upside guys, wheel of fortune and Jeopardy.   I love and miss you so much. 

Very sad to hear of Mrs. Ellis’ passing. I spent a lot of time next door, climbing inside the attic, poking around the spooky basement, playing baseball in the ‘field’, tossing balls over the garage, stealing apples/cherries and hiding around the hedge waiting for an opportunity to kick the can. 

My most vivid images of your Mom remain her lying for hours on the front stoop sunning herself, burning the pampas grass and sitting around the annual Halloween bonfire in a lawnchair. She spent a lot of time keeping her gardens up and I cut those lawns many times...taking great care to avoid damaging her precious Shasta Daisies.

Shirley and the Ellis’s were always like an extended part of the family.   As one of the “Infamous Carnes Clan” when our mother and father would be away at work the constant in our lives was in an emergency go to the Ellis’s and they will help you. Probably the best friend our mother had who she could always relied on was Shirley whether it was playing tennis, bridge,swimming at Shawnigan Lake or the love of french provincial furniture they had a special bond.  One special memory was when I went to take my drivers test my father was at work and my mother could not drive so Shirley agreed to take me to do the drivers exam. When she got in my 1957 beetle she remarked ... “was I sure this car was even going to make it down the street”?...but off we went, and she was definitely correct because the driver instructor took one look at the car and the yellow rejected sticker from the testing station and wouldn’t even get in.   Shirley just shrugged and said sorry kid but I do need a ride home so let’s get going ...it made it down here so it should get us back.

Sad Day. Shirley was a dear friend of the Carnes family.  The many times we played in their yard baseball, kick the can, eating cherries and apples. They always supported me in odd jobs like painting the house or refurbishing a cedar canoe so I would have money for university.  Rugby drew me into the parties at the basement clubhouse but it was the support of the Ellis family that kept me going.  Mother would have tea with Shirley and I am sure that they are right now discussing family, tennis, and bridge.  All the best. Paul Carnes

What a sad day for so many people that knew and loved Shirley.  As part of the Carnes family that lived next the Ellis family for decades,  I can only confirm what everyone knows, a wonderful person has passed on.  To all of the Ellis family, my heartfelt condolences to you all.    

Deb and I, along with our mothers Shirley and Beulah,  have all been life long friends.   We have travelled together, laughed together, made memories together and cherished the quiet times together too.  We visited Shirley when she moved in with Deb at Shawnigan - enjoying lunch on the deck, marveling at the view of the lake,  gossiping and laughing hysterically.  We were so blessed to have had this visit which is how we will always remember her.
