Phillip was the eldest of three children born to Philip (a different spelling) and Annie (Nan) Dollan. He grew up in Baillieston, a community near the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Upon finishing high school Phil completed a General Engineering Apprenticeship, then teacher training and taught high school before emigrating to Canada in 1974. Phil taught Industrial Arts at Shawnigan Lake School and Carihi Secondary in Campbell River, where he met his future wife, Barbara, who was also a teacher.
Phil was a drafting instructor at Vancouver Community College before becoming a faculty member at BCIT delivering lectures and labs in design computing in the Mechanical Engineering Department until he retired. Phil was Program Head of CAD/CAM in the late 80s and was also involved with the AutoCAD training centre for many years. During this time Phil continued his education by completing a Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree and a Master of Education degree. Phil was also a Technical Writer and Consultant creating learning materials for Autodesk, a software company. He made various presentations to students and educators and attended many World Skills competitions. Phil was a dedicated professional. Students and colleagues enjoyed his sense of humour and he always tried to make the learning and work environment fun.
Sport was a large part of Phil’s life whether it was playing football (soccer) for local teams, or tennis and golf. He played soccer with various teams on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland participating in many tournaments including the BC Senior Games, and tournaments in Hawaii. Phil and Barb enjoyed travelling and their favourite destinations were Greece, France, Spain, Portugal, Hawaii (especially Maui) and returning to Phil’s home in Scotland.
Phillip is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, his sister Elaine, his brother Steven and wife Elaine, numerous relatives in Scotland, England, London Ontario and New York, and his brothers-in-law Ken and Wayne and their families. He will be dearly missed especially for his kindness, generosity and sense of humour.
Phil’s wish was to have small gatherings of friends and family which will take place in the future. At that time a toast will be raised to honour a fine man.
