Born in Alert Bay, BC to Fred and Margaret Cook. He was one of six children.
Mary (Alan), Bert, Margaret (Sid), Kathryne, Edwina (Olie)
Mickey was the proud father to Michele, Kelly, Kirby, Chrissy, Kenny, Ernie, and Calvin. He was just as proud to be a stepfather to Trevor, Eileen, Graham, Ashley and Naomi. Mickey was even more proud of his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mickey was raised by his grandparents for the first four or five years. He always thought his mother was his sister and when he did move back in with his parents, genuinely surprised to figure this out. Mickey very proudly talked of being a working man,”We’re from working people!”. Mickey was a fisherman. We all knew this, but it was really who he was. He always joked that he knew the waters like the back of his hand, more than he knew how to get around on land. Mickey fished and skippered on many boats. He fished with his late father Fred, his brother Chris, and Bob Duncan, to name a few.
When Mickey found sobriety, it changed his path! He became an amazing mentor to so many people, more than we will ever know. Mickey always talked about when his sister Honey‘s son Michael found him at an AA rally! He walked in, and he sat down front and centre. Mickey said he knew who he was right away! For over forty years Mickey walked in sobriety. He was blessed with so many friends. He always had a way of helping you understand what you needed to understand. Without fully telling you at times as well!
Mickey worked for almost 20 years with the Victoria Native Friendship Center. After that, he was asked by Hulitan Child and Family Services to be the resident elder. He worked there for the rest of his life. Supporting many families and gaining many nieces and nephews. He was everyone’s uncle there. Mickey loved to work! He talked about returning to work until his last week.
Mickey was a very humble man, but one thing you always felt from him was love!
