Dear Norma and family.
It is with sadness that I received the information about the death of my dear cousin and good friend of almost 90 years. 
Gunnar is one of the people I learned the most from. We both lived in Innerberg until 1940, and have since had contact until 2023, when the last Christmas letter from Canada arrived. In that letter he mentioned his serious illness.
Gunnar had many interests. I remember when he introduced ski jumping, after learning the art from a student he met at Solhov Junior High School in 1947. In the winter of 1948, we ski jumped a lot on the slopes of Innerberg. At the gymnasium in Nordfjordeid, he had learned to throw the discus, and he brought the art to Svensby. He was also good at gymnastics and could walk many meters on his hands. He had an early sense of technology and physics and, together with his father, was able to put in electricity for electric light with the help of a windmill. This happened before 1950. A few years later he graduated as an engineer in heavy current at NTH in Trondheim. The study started at Innerberg!
Back then there were rifles on all farms. These weapons were used to hunt birds and animals, such as grouse and porpoise, which could contribute food and clothing. An uncle, Hilmar, came to Innerberg after the war, and taught Gunnar about hunting. I received a letter from Gunnar once in which he told me that he and his son Rolf had been hunting in western Canada. Perhaps his insight into weapons led to the children taking part in biathlon, with participation in two Olympiads.
Gunnar Johannes was a pioneer who made bold choices, which brought him to America where he became a professor in Calgary and married Norma. He was the first in the village to become an electrical engineer at the famous NTH, and thereby stimulating me to take a university education myself.

I remember briefly meeting my uncle Gunnar and his family as a small child in northern Norway. 
Then it took nearly 40 years before visiting him and his family in Calgary, Victoria and Savary Island.
We will never forget the kindness and hospitality provided to us from the whole family.
Sadly, the distance limited travelling between Norway and Canada. But his yearly letters became a steady Christmas tradition, bringing news and updates from his new homeland. 

Proud of you, uncle. Rest in peace.

 I have been missing you here at Savary and then was so sorry to hear that Gunnar passed away.  It was always special to me to know I had a fellow Norwegian on the island when we had our short greetings.  We prayed for you in the chapel service many times.  God bless you, comfort you and keep you close.

Sad news, Gunnar was a wonderful person.  I was visiting his son, Rolf, in Norway in 1986 and Gunnar gifted me a fishing knife for my birthday. When I returned to Canada MY Dad got ahold of that knife and it became his best and favorite fishing knife that he raved about. Gunnar also helped my wife find a good automobile and negotiated a price we wouldn't know how to get. He will be sadly missed.

Professor Gunnar Johannes Berg was a very good person and a very good friend to me. I am very much shocked knowing his passing away. It is very much sad news for me and whoever know him. I heartily pray for his soul may rest in peace in heaven.

It is with great sadness that I learnt about the passing of our dear friend, Gunnar. I came to know him when I became the Dean of Institute of Engineering (IoE), Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal  way back in 1992. When IOE established Center of Applied Research and Development (CARD), and through this initiative, we started developing a number of Masters' programs with the help of University of Trondheim. Gunnar was very much involved in this initiative. He was most supportive and encouraging. 

During my stint as the Dean, I visited University of Trondheim, where I met him and his other colleagues and we further consolidated our friendship. After I gave up my position as the Dean of IOE in early 1995 and went for a fellowship in Canada and later went to work in Cambodia, I lost contact him. I feel very sad about this.

He was not only a personal friend but a very good friend of Nepal. He showed this by his commitment and actions. He lived a full life on his own terms. It is most unfortunate that I lost touch with him after I started working in Cambodia.

I wish him eternal peace and a rightful place in heaven. I also wish heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. 🙏🙏🙏

Our sincere condolences on Gunnar's passing. 
I joined the Department of Electrical Engineering as a Graduate student in 1966, and later joined the Academic staff, becoming Department Head in 1986. My wife Kay and I have fond memories of Gunnar and family over the many years, both socially and at work. 
Gunnar was indeed a gentleman, always calm, professional, willing to help when needed, and an excellent Professor as well as an avid outdoorsman. He will not be forgotten, and may he rest in peace.

We fondly remember Gunnar from years in the same neighbourhood in Calgary - and also after we all moved to BC's west-coast.  Another reason was that Gunnar and Unni grew up in the same part of northern Norway - so had some similar memories from those years - that were brought forth during visits with each other.
