It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ernie Gerald West in his sleep in the early morning hours of Sunday May 7. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle. In addition, he had several roles in the community volunteering for SPCA for years, car salesman on the side, Mr. Wheeler Dealer and loved to frequent the community coffee shops to share all his humour and stories. He was certainly charming, and worked himself to the bone. He had an ear for music and loved the rhythm of many instruments including life itself. He had charisma which enveloped many people that got close to him. He had several jobs throughout his lifetime. His CV included many other things and here are some of the highlights. His first job was making money knocking on doors and Christmas carolling. He would knock on the door of neighbours and offer his services at age 11 on for raking leaves, shoveling snow, power washing. He worked at Mr. Mike’s dishwashing and worked at the Coast Guard and then he got a City job. He moved around in different departments, Crystal Pool and then was lead hand for building services and event coordinator for City Hall. He was so proud of every job
he had. He loved to serve. In addition he was PAC President at George Jay School in Victoria.
He was often told he looked like Tom Selleck, his piercing eyes that could find their way through any obstacle, however he did not have a lot of time in life to enjoy his charisma, humour and good looks. This was the result of his passionate commitment to family. In fact, due to his great gift of music, he was part of the Scottish Regiment. He was one of the drummers and did some short travels with them. Once again, he left a hobby he endeared because he did not want to be away from his children.
Ernie was born in Victoria, BC. He went to Beacon Hill School, South Park and Central High School (back in the day). He volunteered as Santa in various places over 32 years.
He is survived by his two children – James Ernest West (Kyree Robinson) and Jessica Jane West and his grandchild Akira Hazel May West.
In addition, he is survived by his siblings, nephews and nieces: Stanley Stephen West (daughter Arlee Patricia West, her two children Dominic Smart and Aliya Smart),
Jack West, Cheryl Anita West and Helen Louise Lennie (son Montgomery Lennie).
After his cremation, a Service and Celebration of Life will be held on June June 23rd at 2:00 pm at 4725 Falais Drive, Dignity Funeral Server. We hope to see you there to celebrate Ernie’s life and have a cup of coffee or tea.
In lieu of flowers you can donate to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
