Shortly after moving from Calgary to Vancouver in the late '50's, Brenda met and quickly became a cherished member of the Black family.  She bonded with Mother "B",  her three sons, Bud, Del and Barrie, and older sister Lois.  As we all got married (I married youngest son Barrie), and had children, Brenda was a special Aunt, whom all the grandchildren as well as all the in-laws loved very much.  As many as possible attended her and John's wedding and ever after, he also was included in all birthday, holiday, and Christmas family gatherings.  We always had music at all occasions, and I especially remember Brenda's lovely, pure, clear singing voice.  I regret that none of us will be attending her memorial service but circumstances prevent going.  The Black and Salo families have been sharing stories, on line and by phone , ever since hearing of her passing.  She will be missed by the whole family.  Sincerely, Marilynn

Cheryn Whittingham and myself were also blessed with Brenda , who we loved with all our heart. We were so fortunate to be able to come to the Island, to be with her.  It is never easy to say Goodbye, but we know she would soon be with our Father. John and Brenda had a love story that could never be replaced. 

She is and will be always in my thoughts and prayers.  Love you now and always. 

I was Brenda's granddaughter.  I'd like to share this:

A wonderful woman left our world this past weekend. Brenda Whittingham lived over 91 years and had a life full of family, friends, community service, faith, curling, music, travel, and she had the love of John until the day he died.

Personally, she gave me so much by introducing me to symphony, ballet and her love of the island where she and grandpa built their home stick by brick. Grandma Brenda taught me the art of editing and the value of being independent.

Brenda and I met in 1980 working at WCB and remained close after she retired.  She referred to me as her “young” friend.  We kept in regular contact and I will miss our conversations, the last few were difficult but I will miss her dearly.
