Mary Lou was born January 26, 1936, in Darke County to the late Harold “Jake” & Phebe (Boyd) Shumaker. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Shane Unger; great grandson, Jacob Michael Unger; father-in-law & mother-in-law, Lowell & Delpha Unger; and sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Patsy & Bob Gunkle.
Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 69 years (just 10 days shy of 70 years) Chalmer Unger whom she married September 24, 1954; children, Mike & Jann Unger of Greenville, Jane & Kerry Martin of Waynesfield, Jean & Mike Francis of Piqua and Joanne Coates & Moe Jennings of Deltona, Florida; 12 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; brother & sister-in-law, Richard “Dick” Shumaker of Greenville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary Lou was a 1954 graduate of Versailles High School. She owned and operated the Versailles Greenhouse & Flower Shop and was a custodian at Versailles High School. Mary Lou was a member of Oakland Church of the Brethren. She served as church organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in Versailles for 19 years. Mary Lou loved playing the organ, dancing, sewing, gardening, putting up Christmas decorations and was a huge animal lover. She enjoyed having family and friends over at her house.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, September 28, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery 9239 St Peters Rd. Versailles, OH 45380 with Pastor Bob Bitner officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Peter’s Lutheran Church at US Bank c/o St Peter’s Lutheran Church 1231 East Main St. Versailles, OH 45380.
