September 12, 1922 - September 17, 2017
Joan passed away peacefully in Vernon, BC at the age of 95. She will be very missed by her daughters Mary (Barry Jaquish) and Buffy (Rob) MacGregor; her grandchildren Christine, Allison (Brock), Heather (Thomas), Sean, and great grandchildren, Bethany and William.
Joan was predeceased by her husband Bill (William) in 1995. Joan had a long and very interesting life. She was born in Aldershot, England. Because her father was in the British army and stationed overseas, she spent many years in British boarding schools. She was proud of her own service from 1940-1945 in WW 2, as an officer in the Women's Royal Navy (Wrens), where she decoded submarine signals and was stationed in Portsmouth and London.
Looking for new adventures, she sailed on her own to Montreal, Quebec in 1948, where she worked, met and married her husband Bill in 1950. They raised their two daughters in Montreal, before she and Bill moved in 1973 to Victoria, BC where she continued to live for many years. Joan loved the outdoors, and was a passionate gardener, an early environmentalist, reader, incredible seamstress, and loved animals- especially dogs.
Joan spent almost 4 years living in Vernon to be near her daughter, Mary. The family would like to thank the staff at Polson Extended for her care, and we are especially grateful for the wonderful companionship of Sandy Herbert, who enriched Joan's last years.
A memorial service, and interment will be held in Victoria at a later date.
Arrangements under the direction of Vernon Funeral Home, Vernon, BC.
