George’s 30 year career with the Edmonton Fire Department afforded him the opportunity to put his life- long planning and organizational skills to use. Vision 2000, Combat Challenge, fundraising for The Burn Center, Northern Lights Wheelchair basketball & various youth groups. Those who knew him will always remember his zest for life, vibrant personality in telling humorous stories with that noted smirk shining through and his endless willingness to help others. George’s greatest joys were gatherings with family and friends, adventurous travel, making every minute count.
After his retirement to Vernon, BC he quickly became part of the community through volunteering and fundraising for Prostate Cancer Society and The Vernon Pickleball Association. Introduced by dear friends to the game of pickleball in Hawaii George took on the game with a vengeance. His arranging Fireball Pickleball Tournaments, removing snow from outdoor courts to play in winter will be remembered by many cherished friends of the game.
George is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Brenda, sister Lynn (Ron), brother Robert (Lynne). Fondly missed by 5 sisters-in-law and their spouses along with many beloved nieces and nephews. Proud father of sons Taylor (Martha) of Fort St John, BC and Brian of London, Ontario. Grandpa George will always be loved & missed by his grand-daughters, Eva, Nina, Elizabeth and Avery. He was pre-deceased by parents Irvine & Irene, brother Bryan and daughter Shawna.
The family are especially grateful to the staff at North Okanagan Hospice Society for their gentle kindness and guidance. With sincere gratitude to Dr Cunningham & Dr Humphrey, Vernon, Dr Bachand & Dr Amigo of BC Cancer Clinic, Kelowna, and their amazing teams for their comforting care & compassion. Heartfelt thanks to supportive friends, close family and dear neighbours who surrounded George with love on his final journey.
