Norma was born and raised in Strawn, Illinois, a small country town, October 6, 1928. She has lived in Texas and Arizona but spent most of her life in California.
Nursing and nursing education were Norma’s passion. Her career as a nurse and nurse educator span more than 65 years - having just recently retired at the age of 86.
Norma was a staunch Republican and a member of the Paso Robles Women’s Republican Party. During her career she was a surgical nurse, floor nurse, teacher, education consultant, Director of Nursing and President of Casa Loma College. She also served as a member of the National League for Nursing Review Committee. She was also very active in the Girl Scouts-serving as a leader for many years.
If there was a good book to read, Norma would read it. She was an avid reader, reading books from spirituality and the Catholic faith, to Civil War and WWI history books, to crime and mystery novels – always having two or three books going at one time. She loved going out on the family pontoon boat, walking on the beach, and being First Mate to her husband, Captain, Jack, sailing the oceans off Southern California. Norma’s travels took her to Italy, having an audience with Pope John Paul, to Switzerland, England and France. She also loved traveling around the United States. Fox News lost a devoted follower, and it was not uncommon to see Norma watching the news, sometimes all day – while reading!
Norma is preceded in death by her husband, Jack, of 64 years; survived by her four children, Linda Winn of Ventura, California, Sharon Dugan of Cleburne, Texas, Jeff Jones of San Miguel, California, and Brian Jones of Paso Robles, California. She had eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren, one sister, Rita Maurer of Fairbury, Illinois, and preceded in death by two brothers, Francis Somers and Charles Somers.
And if you asked her, “she always felt fine!”
