She was born January 25, 1925, in Los Angeles to Albert and Mary Rubey. Janet inherited from her father a wonderful spirit of optimism. He always referred to her as “sprite rightis.” Janet never looked the phrase up in the dictionary, but she knew that it was something good and something to treasure.
Janet grew up in the Hollywood Hills. She had wonderful parents who gave her a secure feeling about family and a work ethic that has been with her for a lifetime. She graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. After graduation, Janet taught school in Hawaii for two years at Waialua Elementary School on Oahu.
Janet married Neil Paul in 1954 and from this marriage she was blessed with two children, Laura and Warren, who were the joy of her life. She enjoyed a close relationship with both. Janet was also blessed with three grandsons, Michael, Nathan and Benjamin.
Janet and Neil had a sailboat for thirty years and loved to sail to Catalina Island where they had a mooring at Emerald Bay.
Janet taught elementary school for 24 years. Although it was demanding work, she derived great satisfaction working with children, seeing them learn and feel successful.
She lost her first husband to cancer in 1991. A year and a half later she met Bob Brewer, they were married in 1993. They both sold their homes and moved to Oxnard in 1994.
Janet was a member of the Ventura Baptist Church, the Hollywood Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Chapter FZ of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Santa Barbara Colony of the Society of Mayflower Descendants.
She is survived by her loving husband, Bob; her wonderful children, daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Don Lyons; son, Warren Paul; grandsons, Michael, Nathan and Ben Lyons (wife Jessica); her step children; step grandchildren; and her generous and kind brother, Albert Rubey. Janet is also survived by a tight knit family of cousins, nieces and nephews. She was blessed with a very happy family and the Lord has blessed her abundantly.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017, 10:00 am, at the Ventura Baptist Church, 5415 Ralston Street, Ventura, with The Reverend Dr. Leonard DeWitt officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions may be made in Janet’s name to Rainbow Acres, 2120 Reservation Loop Road, Camp Verde, Arizona 86322.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, CA 93003. Condolences may be sent to TedMayrFuneralHome.com.
