Glenda Jean Hammer, 69, loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away on May 1, 2010 with her beloved family by her side. After a very courageous 5½ year battle with ovarian cancer, she has joined the heavenly angels.
Glenda was born August 23, 1940 in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to Alfred and Birdie Cook. Glenda lived in Sault Ste. Marie until January 1, 1950, when her family relocated to Ventura, CA. She and her twin sister, Paula, spent many happy days at the original Lincoln Elementary School, Cabrillo Jr. High School, graduating from Ventura Senior High School in 1958. She graduated from Chico State University in 1962 earning an Elementary Teaching Credential.
Glenda married her high school sweetheart, John Hammer, in 1962 and they lived and loved 48 years together. During those years, she taught elementary school, and with joy, raised her family of two boys. She also found much happiness bounding off to the tennis courts for a lively game with her many friends. Glenda found satisfaction in volunteering her time in her sons’ classrooms, Jr. Womens, Rotary-Anns, P.E.O. Chapter FZ, and Las Patronas. She was a 57 year member and loyal supporter of the First United Methodist Church, Ventura. She was also a member of Channel Islands Chapter No.78 Order of Eastern Star.
Her warm smile, her generosity and caring way with others, her wonderful sense of humor and her infinite love for her family and beloved grandchildren, Will and Molly, are Glenda’s everlasting legacy to those with whom her life entwined.
Glenda is survived by her beloved husband, John; sons and daughters-in-law Brandt and Mallory Hammer of Ventura and Lance Hammer and Nicole Quaid of Hollywood; grandchildren William and Molly Hammer of Ventura; twin sister and brother-in-law Paula and Jeff Voigt of Spokane, WA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law J.L. and Jan Hammer and sister-in-law, Maxine Spaulding, all of Ventura; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carol Jean and Carl Gibaudy of Westville, IL and Jacquelin and Aaron Stroud of Chino, CA; nephew and wife Tommy and Dara Stork of Ventura as well as several other nephews and nieces.
