Dorothy “Pete” Louise Flint Peterson went to be with the Lord on the February 16, 2011 at Ventura Convalescent Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Robert “Pete” Peterson and her parents, Joseph Howard Flint and Mabel Thurston Flint. She was also predeceased by her only two siblings, Betty Jo Flint Broaddus and Harry Thurston Flint.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty L. Peterson-Wheeler and husband, Curtis, of Inwood, WV, son, Robert A. Peterson, Ventura, CA and one grandson, She is also survived by many, many long term friends who have served as family here in the Ventura area. Patricia Davis has been a special blessing over the last number of years.
Mrs. Peterson was born in Maysville, Missouri, November 30, 1921. She graduated from high school in Centralia, Mo and experienced her first higher education at Orton and Rice Business School. She first entered the work world in Indianapolis with the Farm Security Administration moving to Washington, D.C. at the outbreak of W.W. II. While working in Washington, D’C. she worked for a Navy Lt. Commander. He encouraged her to join the Army Cadet Nurse Corp and she did entering the Metropolitan Hospital School of Nursing in New York City. She served in the Nurses Cadet Corp from 1945-1948 graduating as a nurse in March 1948.
In addition to nurses training, Dorothy received a degree from Philadelphia Bible College and Wheaton College with the intent of following a lifelong dream of being a missionary. She obtained a BA from the University of Redlands and went on to attend Ventura College, The University of California, Santa Barbara, The University of California, Los Angeles, many Elder Hostel Events and probably more. It is an understatement to say that Dorothy valued education and faith greatly.
As a nurse, Dorothy and a friend toured the country taking short term nursing assignments in areas they wanted to see. That is how Dorothy found her way to Ventura in 1954; she worked several years at Community Memorial Hospital, Camarillo State Hospital, and California Department of Health Services Licensing and Certification. She retired with many years of service from the state of California.
Dorothy did not slow down in her retirement years. She was a very early and long time member and volunteer at First Baptist Church, Ventura, she volunteered at Bargain Box Thrift Store for several years and other places in the community. She was also blessed to travel much of the country and world with family and friends.
There will be a memorial service at Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Rd, Ventura, Ca. on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2:00 p.m with Rev. Curtis Wheeler, her son-in-law officiating.
