Dorcas Oates Jones

Born in Compton, CA she attended San Diego State University and graduated with a degree in education. Dorcas was a longtime member of Carlsbad Union Church, and it was here she met her husband Bruce Jones. Dorcas and Bruce owned a wholesale flower business in the San Diego area up until the family relocated to Ventura in 1960.

She taught elementary school in Ventura County until her retirement in 1972. Following retirement, she returned to her love of flowers, growing for local florists up until recently. Dorcas was a parishioner of First United Methodist Church throughout her time in Ventura. She was a member of Ventura Women’s Club and the California Retired Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, in 1985.

Dorcas is survived by her son, Larry and his wife Judy of Tempe, AZ; daughter, Rhoda Miller and her husband Dave of Priest River, ID; four grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.

Services for Dorcas will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1338 E. Santa Clara Street, Ventura on Friday, December 13, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. with The Reverend Mary Birgelaitis officiating. A private graveside service was held at an earlier time.
