Al grew up, learned the meat cutting business from his father. He married Mary Ellen Ewalt and had four sons, Lary, Kenneth (died shortly after birth), Ronald and Dennis during their time in Detroit. After 30 days of consistent rain, Mary Ellen convinced Allan to pack up and move to California in 1944, first to Inglewood then to Westchester, California.
Allan continued cutting meat at various markets until changing profession to retailer. At this time, Allan and Mary Ellen were living in Ojai. Allan and Lary started Reid’s Appliance in Ventura, along with the help of Ronald. After 21 years of selling appliances Allan and Lary retired from Reid’s. Allan, being a longtime member of Saticoy Country Club, enjoyed his final years playing golf with many friends.
His wife, Mary Ellen, and son, Dennis Reid preceded him in death. Allan is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Lary and Dorothy Reid and Ronald and Janet Reid; granddaughters, Alison Brannan, Christine Reid Brown and Rhonda Reid as well as many great grandchildren.
A very special thank you to Carmen and Edmundo for their love, attention and concern for Allan. Thank you also goes to Livingston Memorial Hospice and Dan Kaplan, R.N. for his assistance in Allan’s final days.
Rest in peace, Dad. We all will remember our special time together and will miss you.
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held 2:00 P.M., Saturday, October 27th, 2012, at the family home in Ventura.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3150 Loma Vista Rd., Ventura.
