Shui Kuen married Lin Hoy Sum at the age of 17 in 1951. They have 3 children, Mei Nor, Simon and Melody. In 1955, after the birth of their daughter, Mei Nor, Shui Kuen supported her husband’s decision to emigrate to Canada in search for a better life for their family. He had to leave before their son Simon was born that year.
Shui Kuen encountered many hardships and challenges in the next 12 years to raise their 2 children Mei Nor and Simon in China, until her husband returned in 1967. After their daughter Melody was born in 1968, her husband went back to Canada to work to earn money to support their family in China. Shui Kuen was left behind and continued to raise their 3 children all by herself in China. In 1976 Shui Kuen was able to bring Simon and Melody to join her husband. Their eldest daughter Mei Nor joined them 4 years later in 1979.
In Canada, Shui Kuen worked tirelessly to support her family. Despite the language barrier, she found work in a commercial laundromat, and later as a cook in a restaurant.
Through perseverance, she secured a union job at a salmon factory to earn higher pay and better benefits, a testament to her courage and resilience. Even after working long night shifts, she still selflessly cared for her three grandchildren, Elysia, Vincent and Michael. She took them to school and managed the household chores – No sacrifice was too great for her family’s well-being.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother and doting grandmother. She was also skilled in cooking, sewing, knitting and gardening. She will be remembered for her kind heart, moral character, wisdom, great style and unwavering dedication to her family’s prosperity.
