The Fox family would like to announce the passing of their mother, Margaret Fox. Margaret peacefully passed on December 22, 2021, while residing at the Windemere Long Term Care Facility (Vancouver) at 91.
Margaret was born in Lougheed, Alberta, on July 17, 1930, to Herbert and Catherine Cookson. She was the third of four children (the only daughter), and she is survived by her brother Ken and sister-in-law Betty Cookson of Lacombe, Alberta.
Margaret is survived by her three children: Norman, Sandra, and Marianne; as well, five grandchildren: Christa (Fox), Brendan (Fox), Karley (Fraser), Wyatt (Sjoberg-Fox), Matilda (Sjoberg-Fox), four great-grandchildren: Kayla (Loos), Kyle (Loos), Kory (Loos), Parker (Fox) and most recently a great-great-grandson Liam (Loos) who she was able to hold before departing.
Margaret is predeceased by her husband, James "Bud" Fox, her eldest daughter Cindy Fox, her parents Herbert and Catherine Cookson, and her two brothers Jack and Norman Cookson.
Margaret retired from public service in 1985 as a health care provider at British Columbia's Valleyview Hospital, which focused on the care of elderly persons with disabilities. Some years after retiring, Margaret moved into the West End of Vancouver and became involved with St Andrew's Wesley United Church. She enthusiastically supported the LGBTQ+ community and was often seen on the Church's float during Vancouver's annual pride parade.
She respected all of humanity, including the homeless to whom she often handed out cookies and sometimes money. Margaret was an animal lover and had fostered two senior cats whom she loved immensely. She was often recognized while out walking, and if not, she always found someone new to talk to and always enjoyed hearing their stories.
One of her proudest moments was being interviewed by Mike McCardell and seeing her story in print as a chapter in Mike's most recent book. Being seen by her friends on the local News hour was a delightful moment for her.
Margaret had many challenges in her life, but she faced them with grace and a smile. She was fiercely independent, maintaining her own home up to the age of 90, staying active on social media, and keeping involved with young people, as an enthusiastic "Gramma" with her Church’s' Parent and Tot program drop-ins.
The family wishes to thank everyone at Windemere for our mother's care. Margaret led her life with optimism and joy. She will be missed by many.
In keeping with our mother's wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will be planning a celebration of life in the spring or summer of 2022.
