Lincoln Louis Michael Mackinnon was brought into the world on December 26, 1990 by his beloved birthmother Shelley Berry. Louis had a lively and joyful childhood, filled with mischievousness and a love of hijinks that continued to the end of his life. He was proud of his Indigenous heritage and fiercely loyal to his friends, who were both diverse and legion. As an adult he worked and partied hard: he was happiest when surrounded by people or mastering a challenging roofing job. Or both. He could make a friend in the time it took to smoke a cigarette, loved to dance through the night and literally gave the shirt off his back on occasions too numerous to count.
For all the lightness in his life, Louis struggled to overcome chaos and ended up on a dark road from which there was no turning back. Nevertheless, he was loved beyond measure, as his dear friend Janessa summed up in her tribute “The Art of Being Louis”:
Finding the beauty and/or intrigue in almost everyone you meet. Having numerous hidden talents and knowledge. Not allowing anything to surprise you. Tolerance and compassion for human beings no matter who they are or where they come from. An open heart and open mind. A love for children and animals (and walking neighbours’ pets). Constantly reminding the women in your life of their beauty and worth. Habitually reconnecting with friends and family by phone… or by foot. Leaving an ingenious mark on any project you are part of. Going out of your way to make your friends feel seen and heard. Having the most extraordinary spirit and capacity to love.
Louis will never be far from our hearts. He was predeceased by his birthmother and grandparents. He leaves to mourn his parents Norma (Peter) and Glen (Leanne); his sisters Natalie, Jaimie, Courtney and Bryde (Chris); his brothers Dreyton and Graeme (Emily); all his loving aunts, uncles and cousins; and soul brothers and sisters across Canada.
Louis celebrated life and we will celebrate his on March 2nd, 2024 at the Inglewood Community Centre; 1:00 – 4:00 PM. Reception to follow (at a location tbd).
