It was not until I received the December 2021 edition of the Canadian Funeral News did I learn of Jack’s passing and as such, I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to you and your family.

As a former Board Member and Past President of the Funeral Service Association of Canada during the years 1993-2001 I had many occasions, especially during conferences and Annual Meetings to speak with Jack about the funeral profession and his goals, objectives and vision for SCI.

He was one of the leaders in this profession and it was a privilege to know him.

I was deeply saddened to learn today of Jack’s passing. 

Jack was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known. He was not only my boss for 15 years, he became one of the best friends I have ever had.  He always had my back and I knew I could always depend on his wisdom, candour and, of course, his amazing sense of humour.

I feel blessed to have had Jack in my life.

He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Crystal I was so shocked and deeply saddened at the news of Jack’s passing.   My prayers are with you and your family.  

 Jack had the gift of the minute he met you he made you feel welcome and  important.  I was very honoured to be invited to a Manager’s dinner in Vancouver. I was still relatively new to SCI; about a year or so,  I was told Jack Gordon would be at the dinner and of course I knew who he was.  I was so nervous. We got to the restaurant and were served our cocktail and mingled. It was very loud and busy.  I turned to speak to this gentleman and I said “I believe you said your name was Randy?”  To which he said with a chuckle (can’t you just see him). No it’s Jack. Oh I said and then the penny dropped…”as in Jack Gordon?”  We all had a great chuckle.   I was so embarrassed but Jack was the epitome of grace.   I even got up the nerve to ask him if I could have a picture with him.   

 Jack was consistently a fun, wise and gracious gentleman.  There was no pretence whatsoever about Jack.   There are not enough words to express what Jack meant to me in the short time I knew him. 

It really was such an honour and privilege to know Jack. He has left such an amazing legacy.   My heart and prayers are with you Crystal. 


Dear Crystal, I am truly saddened to learn that the love of your life, your husband Jack, has recently passed away.  May his soul rest in eternal peace.  I pray that our Heavenly Father grant you and all of your family members the strength and courage to carry on living in the firm assurance that you are never alone, not for one moment.  Each one of you is a true treasure in the sight of God and He will never abandon any of you.  He loves you beyond your wildest imagination.  Always remember that although Jack is no longer with you in this physical world the love you shared together over all of the years never dies, ever. What can I say that hasn’t already been said about the wonderful man Jack was?  I had the distinct honour and privilege of working with Jack for over 20 years. During that time, I learned a great deal from him. I could only hope to be a fraction of the leader he was. Not only was Jack my boss but I considered him my friend. I will never forget the kindness Jack showed me when my father passed away suddenly while I was attending a quarterly meeting in Vancouver. On that very dark day, he was my rock. ❤️
Even after I retired, we stayed in touch. Jack even checked in to make sure we were ok when the wildfires were raging this summer. That’s just the type of man Jack was. I will miss him but my memories will remind me of what a great, yet gentle man Jack was. Rest peacefully , Jack.

I just wanted to add that I was very sorry not to be there in person at the beautiful tribute to Jack today. Showing up is important as we know funeral service.  I am currently in Mexico but would certainly have been there with you if I had been in Canada. My sincere apologies for not being there. When Crystal texted me and shared the news my heart broke.  I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Gordon.  My mom and dad George and Peggy Cooper have been friends with Jack and Crystal for years.  Ever since they met at soccer where my brother Don and I believe it was Dean played  on the same team.  I Remember they became great friends from that day forward.  My mom especially stayed very close to Crystal.  I refer Mr. Gordon as a super great person and funny.   My fondus memory was their great dain .  Wow I thought Mr. Gordon was tall, then there was the dog.  Everytime they came back to Ontario they would always try to make an effort to meet up with mom and dad.  They always had good time and laughs.  I'm sure you all laughed when your great dain at Drew's confirmation cake that mom made.  
Dad and I are sending all  our love to you Crystal and family.  I only wish I could have been there for you like you have ALWAYS been for my mom.  Love!❤


Jack was always a welcome voice and always supportive.    I was lucky to meet him early in my SCI career and learned so much from him and his leadership team.

I only met Jack a few times, but my memories of him are wonderful- at a cooking class at Whistler: Jack , in his chef’s  outfit, shucking peas and carefully cooking the duck, while enjoying a glass of wine.  So many laughs.  Wish I could find the photos.  
The gracious way he greeted me; he was always so cordial.  Such a gentleman, inviting my sister Diane and I to share a cab to the Cancun airport.  Lovely conversation with him and Crystal.

We will hold Jack's memory dear to our hearts and remain in touch with Crystal as she goes through this very difficult and premature loss at a time in their lives where they should have really enjoyed retirement.  I have one memory that will always stick with me. Jack  and Crystal and the boys lived in a house here in Oakville back in the mid 90's  literally 5 blocks away from a house we moved into when we moved from Saskatchewan.  It was about the same time they moved out to Vancouver.   One of the first things Jack would always say to me year after year when greeting me at conventions or wherever, was "how is my house doing out there?"  I last saw them at the convention in Kelowna, 2 years ago, and same question.  That big smile, that wonderful handshake.  He was a truly sincere man, and Crystal was always there with a smile to match.  They were an inseparable couple, and we all feel your pain and loss.

Needless to say I was shocked and deeply saddened when I heard of Jack's passing. We both started our corporate funeral careers at the same time (although with rival firms) but throughout our careers, our paths would cross at many corporate and social events. Jack always was the consummate gentleman and treated me with respect and a friendly handshake every time we met. I am sadden to hear of Jack’s passing.  I worked with him and Melisa in the SCI corporate office for 9 years until 2008.  I have fond memories of him.  He was a wonderful person.  Kind, friendly, funny and sincere.  He showed such professionalism and was a great leader.  He will be greatly missed.  My deepest condolences to you and your family.

I met Jack way back in the early 90s. I was just starting out as executive director of the now-known-as Washington Cemetery, Cremation & Funeral Association. I called on Jack several times to be a presenter at our conferences, and he always obliged cheerfully. His sessions were always stuffed with facts and useful information, all presented in a genial, friendly manner. I never had the chance to get to know him very well, but I did know he would be (and was) there for me and our association when we needed his help or advice. I have very fond memories of Jack. I send my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

On behalf of the CSE class of ’66, I would like to offer my condolences on the death of Jack. 
In 1964, thirty five young men, many of us still in our late teens, met for the first time as a group at 22 College Street, Toronto  – what was then known as the Banting Institute.  Home of future funeral directors!
Not one of us had ever met another person in this group. We came from all parts of Ontario, some even relocating from other provinces, namely Manitoba and Quebec.  Jack was in his late teens also and was immediately centered out as coming from Schrieber, Ontario. Now, where was that!?  We soon were educated that it was a small railroad town located on top of Lake Superior. He would embellish his many stories of growing up in the North and life there. He was well liked and very well spoken – even being voted one of our six class reps! His area being the far North – a railroader!

Jack was a good listener and willing to take some of us younger guys under his wings when it came to us being ‘country boys’ in the Big City. 
Upon our graduation he always made a point to attend our every five year class reunion, beginning in 1971 and up to 2016, being our 50th year. 
He was the epitome of class, highly respected, caring and devoted to his amazing family. His face would light up when talking about his four grandchildren:  Jackson, Lexi, Taylor and Sydney. 
Jack’s many accomplishments in funeral service are well documented and his contributions to the funeral industry during his time with SCI, will leave a lasting impression on funeral industry for many years to come. 
We will all miss his friendly smile, firm handshake and his care and concern for others.

I was sad when I learned of Jack's death.  It had been my singular good fortune to have passed Jack's path in my many travels and work in Canadian funeral service.  Jack, in my opinion, was a true funeral service leader, and I concluded long ago that his leadership abilities were grounded in his genuine love of our profession.  Jack was very skilled and knowledgable at his approach to quality funeral service, and those of us who were fortunate to know him and cross his path were and still are the beneficiaries of a gem of a human being, and a truly Great Canadian Funeral Director.  Our profession is much diminished with his death.  Jack left his mark, his gentlemanly positive mark, on scores of funeral professionals and all that were fortunate to know him and call him a friend. I met Jack 25 years ago a great man a hand shake and his word was enough to close a deal.

Jack was a great friend and generous in spirit. I had the pleasure of working closely with him. He was a gentleman and his word was golden. He loved to host his American counter parts and happiest with Crystal at his side. The two of them  were a team. He loved Crystals RCMP stories and her sharing them with us. Then of course their love for family and each other shined forth.  I always loved my time with them. May God bless Jack’s soul and comfort Crystal and his family now and ever more.

I was so shocked and saddened by Jack's passing. I have so many beautiful memories of our times with him and his family. We are cousins and I remember Christmas s together and of course the times building and enjoying the camp .Jack was an amazing man all who met him loved and respected him so much. One special one is when they were first married and we stayed with them while our son Gordon was in the hospital. We brought steaks to BBQ and Jack was so excited as money was tight for them. We were outside there place enjoying ourselves when a huge seagull flew down and took a steak. Jack was devastated and amost in tears. We still had lots but I wilĺ always remember the look on his face. You were a very special man Jack. RIP.

Our sincerest condolences on Jack's passing.  He was such a mentor to me during my 11 years at SCIC and someone I have (and will always) look up to as a leader and as a friend. Jack was always a true gentleman, a fantastic boss, and an all-around class act. Even after I left SCIC, we stayed in touch and he was always available for some sage advice and guidance. Jack has left a lasting legacy amongst those he worked with. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

For me to know and work with Jack, was a personal privilege,

 My sympathies and condolences to Crystal and the family . Jack was such a wonderful and special person . One of his many professional accomplishments and positive  influences  was when he joined SCI Canada after we became a public company in the early 90s . His leadership was instrumental in the success of SCI Canada as a public company and  after as he lead Canadian operations as a part of the SCI family . Also , he was just a great guy and a good friend that will be sorely missed . I am so thankful for Jack’s friendship , positive influence and many great memories ! 

It was a pleasure working for Jack for 6 years. An extremely dedicated, hardworking and “ to the point” leader.
