AUGUST 3, 1948 – OCTOBER 5, 2024
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our brother Gilbert Arthur Auchinleck, also known as ‘Doc Harris’ to his many friends and listening audience. Doc was born in Vancouver on August 3, 1948 to Gilbert and Effie Auchinleck. Much to his dismay, he ended up with four siblings: Dick, Lesley (Scott), Barbara (Paul), and Geoffrey. After attending school in Vancouver, Kamloops and Victoria, he landed his first official radio job at Victoria’s CFMS. After his first broadcast the station manager declared his last name unpronounceable and Gil Harris was born. (The Doc part is a whole other story.) His radio career took him from town to town across Canada to Toronto, and eventually back to Vancouver. He accepted a job at CKLG where he became very well known for his quick wit and funny segments which are still remembered to this day. He was voted top disc jockey in the city for two years running and then they discontinued the contest! Over his long career, he was fired from almost every station in the lower mainland. As well as his radio show, he worked as an actor, was the voice for many commercials, (Brown Bros Ford!) was the narrator for Dragon Ball Z, the voice of a character on My Little Pony, and many other gigs too numerous to mention. When the family gathered for many Sunday dinners, he kept us all laughing and trying to outdo him. He passed peacefully to the strains of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon on Saturday October 5, 2024 surrounded by family. We hope heaven is ready for him!
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MountPleasantFuneral.com for the Auchinleck family.
