Mom was born in Victoria and raised in Vancouver where she lived a full and happy life. She went to Langara Elementary School and Lord Byng High School and continued to have “girl friends” from her school days. She was the youngest and only girl of four children of Ellen and Neil MacLean.
Mom and Dad were married on February 19, 1948. Mom was 19 years old and Dad was 21 years old. Cheryl was born in 1950, Wendy in 1953, and Barry in 1958. With the birth of Jennifer in 1961, the family was complete.
Mom and Dad provided us with a loving and caring upbringing for which we will be forever thankful. The old house on 37th Ave. was infamous for the many gatherings of family, old friends, new friends, and casual acquaintances. Everyone was made to feel welcome and there was always room “for one more” around the table. We have many good memories and stories that make us laugh from the times on 37th Ave.
Mom and Dad had many adventures over the years including trips to Europe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Mexico, and the British Virgin Islands. They spent a year in Europe living in Portugal, England and Holland. They always returned home with more friends than when they left!
Family was always important to Mom and Dad and they were thrilled when the family grew to include Don and Roy and then their grandchildren!! When the kids were young Mom and Dad helped with their childcare and have left the children with many wonderful memories from that time. The grandkids were always a great source of amazement, love and fun for Mom and Dad. Kirsten, Blake, Paul and Bronwyn are so lucky to have had so much time, love and attention from their Grandma.
As Mom was predeceased by her brothers, she was the last of her immediate MacLean family. Mom enjoyed keeping in touch with her nieces and nephews from the MacLean and Scott side of the family.
Mom had numerous health challenges over the years that she met and persevered with and this earned her the affectionate title of “tough old bird”. Her way of handling her challenges was an inspiration to the rest of us. With her growing health issue in the last few years, Mom was very thankful to have Barry living with her. It made all the difference to her outlook on life to have him with her.
On Friday Nov. 27 Mom passed away at home sitting in her chair watching TV. She had just returned 2 days earlier from a 10 day trip to Palm Springs with Cheryl, Wendy and Jennifer. On that trip, Mom met new friends, went to a nightclub, shopped and enjoyed a U.S. Thanksgiving dinner hosted by friends. We feel very fortunate to have spent so much time with her during the last days of her life.
While Mom’s unexpected passing is a shock to us, we take comfort in the fact she no longer has any pain and solace in the thought that she will be reunited with those who have gone before her, especially Dad.
We hope you will join us for a celebration of her wonderful life: Sunday January 24, 2016,
1:00 – 4:00 p.m. at VanDusen Gardens, 5251 Oak Street- Floral Hall. The program will begin at 1 p.m. and be followed by time to share memories, reminisce, and give a toast to Eleanor
