To my 二哥哥, big brother Edwin, 

We have so many shared memories together, it’s hard to even know how to begin. Do I pick something from our growing up years in Hong Kong? Or when we were all fresh-off-the-boat in the United States, figuring out our new lives in a new country? Or the years raising our families in different countries or even the later years when we celebrated the birth of grandchildren and other milestones from afar? 

If I had to think of one story to share, it would be this one. I remember the time when Patrick and I had just relocated to Shanghai and were actually still living in a hotel. Patrick was busy and had already started business travel within China in his new role. One day I was told by my doctor of my sky rocketed high blood pressure to above 200. I told you about that on the phone.  Immediately, you booked a flight over from Hong Kong and came to see me as soon as possible. As we sat together, eating dinner, you cared for me, making sure that I was well taken care of. You even told the waiters and waitresses at the hotel to reduce the salt in any and all of my dishes henceforth, giving them instructions too to take care of me after you had left. 

I still hold that incident in my heart. In that moment, you were a brother that I could count on. Someone who would drop everything to take care, to take very good care of me. You have done this over and over throughout my life at different stages of my life. I miss you and will hold you in my heart.

I first met Edwin when I arrived at the Rheumatology Division of UCLA in 1971. We were both trainees in its research laboratories. Being both Hong Kongers, we quickly became good friends and spent many evenings playing ping pong at his makeshift table. His wife Winnie already showed considerable cunningness at spinning the ball but was equally good at steaming fishes. Although I was shy and introverted, I admired his affability and his high degree of intelligence. I did not see him while he was studying for an MD-PhD degree in Canada. The next time we met was after he settled in hilly Palos Verdes, carrying out a thriving clinical practice as well as a real estate business. Winnie was always running in their colossal garden chasing after three little kids. Both Edwin and Winnie were like perpetual twin engines going at a supersonic speed. 
But I remember him best watching him on his own tennis court. He would be squatting right behind the net, swaying left and right, intensely concentrated, and ready to pounce with a superhuman stroke. Edwin was always like a tight wind spring, full of energy, ready to be released at any moment of his will. Indeed, whatever Edwin endeavored, he would put all his mind and heart into it. Not a single project was pursued half-heartedly. He was such an inspiring person that he was always surrounded by friends who adored him and Winne. 
We saw each other only sparingly after he became a Professor in Theology at Regent College in Vancouver.  I knew he had dedicated himself to Christ, the study and teaching of theology, particularly to China. The last time I visited him was at his house. He was surrounded by a dozen eager young graduate students. I could hear his laughter even as I was chewing a drum stick in the adjoining room. That was a peal of laughter I would never forget. There were so much spontaneity and enthusiasm, so infectious yet so generous as if his entire life was crystallized in that single utterance.

We are so thankful for having Uncle Edwin in our lives... a true “old” family friend, but not just for his generation but to the generations beyond. He led the life caring for other’s body, life, and spirit. This world is a better place because of him. We shall miss him dearly.

Dear Uncle Edwin, 

I still remember what you gave to us on our wedding day — a red packet for me and a note to Sei Wei saying, “From now on, you’ll be asking Steph for the money”. It was so funny that we all still remember it to this day.  I know that you and your good humor will be missed. 

Our condolences to Auntie Winnie, Naomi, Emily, Jeremy and your whole family.

Dr Edwin Chi-Wai HUI: You will be sorely missed.  Going back to the days in Bible Bees, Bible Explorers in Emmanuel Church, to the gusto hymn singing in Emmanuel Bookstore, to the summer camps in Deep Well, to the memories of your brother Simon, tall and slim, and of you, chubby and always smiling, to the radio recording rooms at Far East Broadcasting Corp with our Good News Broadcasting Group doing radio dramas, to the days when we part our ways, and then to meet again in Vancouver.  Then to chat briefly in the DBS Old Boys dinner. Then to learn that you stepped ahead.  We will miss you. RIP.
