Douglas Alexander McLeod, loved friend, uncle and brother, passed away at his home in Vancouver after challenges with pain and pain management from his long struggle with Crohn’s. Doug was loved for his wonderful sense of fun, his compassionate and caring nature, his incisive intelligence and his eagerness to engage in a lively exchange of ideas and life philosophies. Doug offered help whenever called upon by any friend in need but always assured others that he was doing fine no matter what his own struggles. He always listened carefully, offered affirmation and respect and gave meaningful advice.
Predeceased by his parents, Mary and Donald McLeod, and his older brother Bruce, Doug is survived by his siblings Barbara (Oakville), John and his wife, Bryna (Guelph), and his nieces and nephews, Meredith (Vancouver), Megan (Portland), Marshall, Duncan (Vancouver), Alex (Tallahassee,) and Eden (Guelph). Doug attended Carlton University, and eventually made the move west to Vancouver, where he spent the rest of his life. Doug spent a number of years in financial services before transitioning to a long and robust career at Newstech and Catalyst Paper as a buyer in the paper recycling industry, until his retirement at 58. Doug spent his retirement years traveling, returning to Muskoka often to spend time with family at “Little Gara” on Lake Muskoka, and on Kawagama Lake. He welcomed his grand niece Kinsley in September and was a perfect natural as a great Uncle. We will miss visiting him in Rancho Mirage, CA at his vacation home, the place he seemed to love most in the world. He was a giant in life, will be missed by all he knew and will be remembered as a devoted and steadfast friend.
A celebration of Doug's life, - a party as he wished, will be held in Vancouver at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Doug’s memory to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, the national charity focused on finding a cure and improving lives affected.
