On September 13, 2024, David John Heffernan passed quietly in his sleep in Rancho Cucamonga, California. He is preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Evelyn Gertrude, and survived by his sons David Joseph, and his wife, Jean, of Divide, Colorado, and Mark Lynn, and his wife, Susanne, and son, Ian, of Upland, California.
David was a World War II veteran, fighting on Okinawa as part of Company K of the 184th Infantry, and a Korean War veteran, as a member of the United States Air Force. David was a graduate of Ohio State University, graduating in June of 1950 with a B.A. Afterwards, David's career would take him to Hill Air Force Base in Utah, where he would meet Evelyn. They were married in Ogden, Utah on August 31, 1951. Upon leaving the Air Force in 1954, David worked as a reporter for the Ogden Standard Examiner and KSL Television in Salt Lake City. David's civil-service career took him to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he was Chief Information Officer, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), and to the 452nd Air Refueling Wing of March Air Force Base in Riverside, California, where both he and Evelyn worked until their retirement.
While living in Colorado, David discovered his love for motorcycles, fishing, and exploring the beautiful state. David was an avid photographer, amassing a collection of thousands of slides and countless hours of video, featuring a multitude of subjects, ranging from cars to the great outdoors. David and Evelyn resided in Utah, California, and Colorado, before ultimately settling in Riverside, California. David will be buried at Riverside National Cemetery, resting for all eternity alongside Evelyn. The service will be private, held on October 9th, 2024.
